Subject: Blue Jays @ Twins
It's becoming clear that the Jays do not intend to play up to their level of talent in 1991, as they continue to do no more than just tread water (with great difficulty even at that).... Game 1: Jimmy Key (!) and Duane Ward combined on a 3-hitter, but the Jays offense was almost completely silent throughout this series though we made a minor exception today and actually scored a couple of runs. Thankfully that was enough; final score: 2-1. Key had a shutout though 5 innings and had recently been given a 2-run lead, but Key was quickly yanked when he was gophered to open the MNA 6th. Ward was just about perfect -- he had to be -- and followed with 4 hitless innings which sealed up the narrow win. Game 2: Todd Stottlemyre and Jack Morris hooked up in a low-scoring duel and the difference in the contest came down to BP homers. The Twins got one chance: success! The Jays had 2 chances: 2 failures. Final score: 2-0. Morris pitched very well, but no better than Stottlemyre who was saddled with the undeserved defeat. Game 3: Rod Nichols' 1991 debut was exceedingly solid, as he pitched into the 9th inning for Toronto. But the TOA offense was asleep once more for the entire day until briefly awakening in the 8th and erasing our 2-run deficit. Unfortunately Nichols couldn't pitch forever, so Tom Henke replaced him and you can easily guess the rest. Final score: 3-2 in 10 innings after we failed on yet another BPHR attempt in the top of the frame. Game 4: In the final inning of the series the Jays offense got their first break, and it was an important one. Having choked away leads of 1-0, 3-1, and 4-3, the Jays achieved a ballpark homer at long last when Lance Parrish connected off of Mike Hartley in the 9th, and the Jays hung on for a 6-4 victory to get a hard-earned series split. Tom Candiotti (7-1) tossed a shaky complete game, and Minnesota's Sid Fernandez was no less shaky for his side. Alan |
