Subject: Blue Jays @ Tigers

The Jays hit rock bottom -- at least we *hope* it was the bottom -- in the opener, before rebounding despite late-inning chokes, massive LOB 'advantages' (20-5 over the last two games!) and timely unearned runs generously donated by the best defense in the league....

Game 1: How far the Jays have sunk was nicely illustrated by the fact that Bill 'Batting Practice' Gullickson had a no-hitter going into the 6th inning.  He was immediately lifted after allowing hit #1 and the Tigers quickly upped their narrow 1-0 lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the frame off of Jose Guzman, who is supposed to be the one to pitch like Gullickson did.

But the Jays finally took the bats out of cold storage and nicked reliever Mike Willis for 4 runs in the 8th and even took the lead in the 11th despite missing a gimme BPHR earlier; a critical failure, as it turned out.

In the bottom of the 11th Detroit got 2 men on with 2 outs against alleged 'ace' reliever Duane Ward.  With the Tigers still down to their final out, Ward choked up: the game-tying RBI single; a HBP to load the bases; and another single to complete the disaster.  Final score: 6-5.  Ward has learned well from the master.

======================================

Game 2: Another easily-hittable pitcher thwarted the Toronto offense.  Actually, Frank Tanana was no Bill Gullickson (5 IP, 7 hits) but the only time we could plate a run today was via a solo (of course) homer.  We got one of those in each of the 6th, 7th & 8th innings and took a slim 3-2 lead that required just one batter into the bottom of the 9th for Tom 'The Master' Henke to choke away.

Fortunately, Duane Ward pitched as effectively as his card for a change, striking out the Tigers *on 9 pitches* in the 9th after Henke was hauled away.  Ward ended up with 3 perfect innings and 7 Ks, and earned a well-deserved win after we scored twice without the aid of any home runs in the 11th.  Final score: 5-3.  TOA pitchers combined for 12 IP, 5 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 BB and 12 Ks.

======================================

Game 3: Dan Gakeler made his debut for the Tigers and wobbled through a shaky first inning but escaped having allowed just 2 runs as the Jays LOBbed the bases loaded.  Naturally it took established veteran Todd Stottlemyre no time at all to choke back that lead, and more, with the help of a timely defensive gaffe that led to 2 unearned runs.

Down 3-2 after one inning, Toronto pecked away at the rookie and chased Gakeler by taking a 5-3 lead in the 5th.  Up 6-3 in the 8th, Stottlemyre suffered his third gopher bite of the day and hit the showers with his lead down to 1.  Mike Flanagan took over and retired all 5 Detroit batters that he faced to save the 6-5 nailbiter.  TOA pitchers combined on a 6-hitter with 0 walks, but:

Of the 11 hits we allowed over the last 20 innings, 5 left the park and 2 were doubles; Toronto committed 0 errors in the series yet still managed to allow 3 important unearned runs which nearly cost both of the final 2 games and (factoring in all the LOB) what should have been a sweep for the Jays could easily have been a sweep in the other direction.

Alan
