Subject: Reds @ Braves

If either of these two teams knows how to pitch or play defense, they concealed that knowledge remarkably well during this ugly, ugly series....

Game 1: How many teams routinely blow 6 run leads?  Just one, and we did it again today.  Cincy had a 6-0 lead after 2 innings; Tim Belcher choked it all away and was lifted with the score 8-7 in Atlanta's favor after 4.1 innings of stellar pitching.  After John Smoltz failed to survive the first inning, the Braves went through 7 relievers and most were just as helpless as the Reds pitchers.  Despite coughing up a pair of runs in ATN's last at-bats (see also games 3 and 4) Cincinnati somehow hung on to win by the lacrosse score of 12-10.

Greg Olson had 3 hits, 4 RBI and homered twice off Cincy pitchers, thereby tripling his 1991 season HR total in one game.

===========================================

Game 2: Another 6-run lead today.... and we damn near blew it again.  Up 8-2 after 5 innings, the Reds politely extinguished our own offense, but not Atlanta's.  CIN starter Greg Harris handed out free passes galore (8 in 6 IP) and they eventually came back to haunt him, but reliever Kevin Gross staggered through three innings and preserved our suddenly-close 8-6 win.  John Kruk led the attack with 4 hits & 3 RBI, and .200 hitter Olson had another good day at the plate for the Braves.

===========================================

Game 3: When the Reds are involved in a contest where one side gets all the breaks, you can be 99% sure we aren't on the good side.  Today was the 1% exception, for 8 1/2 innings anyway.  Seven ATN pitchers allowed 13 runs to the Reds, the Braves actually outhit us but LOBbed 13 and Scott Scudder took a shutout into the 9th before doing what all Cincy pitchers do in bottom of the 9th.  Final score: 13-4.  Three of ATN's LOB came in the 9th when Cincy-killer Ozzie Guillen inexplicably missed a 1-18 single with 2 outs, otherwise we'd probably be looking at an epic 14-13 loss.

===========================================

Game 4: After a couple of unsuccessful choke attempts in games 1 & 3, we finally got it right in the finale and only had to forfeit a mere 4-run lead to do it.

Greg Swindell reported to surgery with a 5-1 lead in the 7th and was taken to the morgue moments later, leaving it to the Cincy bullpen to complete the choke with 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th.  Mission accomplished, 6-5, when pinch-hitter Francisco Cabrera plated the losing run off of Norm Charlton.  Randy Myers had tossed 3 'scoreless' innings in relief though he blew the save sky-high by allowing THREE runs charged to Swindell.  Swindell had begun the ATN 7th by allowing 4 baserunners, zero of them via hits (walk, walk, walk, HBP); those were his only walks of the game, but very nicely bunched.

The Cincy bats contributed to the losing effort as well, as today it was the Reds turn to reach double digits in LOB in the 1-run loss.

Alan
