Just about everything that can go against them does as the Padres drop the last 3.  WHen we weren't managing to find the one out in a column of hits we were busy hitting into double plays (8 in the series) or being thrown out on the bases. Conversely, we couldn't even throw out Tom Pagnozzi on a blown hit and run play.

game 1: Bruce Hurst had his typical game,  7 innings and 4 hits allowed in this one but the defense really let him down. Cards scored a run in each of the first 3 innings, but only 1 was earned. First inning, error, groundout x play single for a run.  2nd inning, error, triple for a run.  3rd inning walk, triple for a run. Scoring that at home, 4 hits were 2 x play singles and 2 triples. Padres used 4 consecutive singles, a sac bunt walk and another single to tie it in the 4th. Stayed that way through 9, although HAL tried to end it in the 9th.  With 2 outs and no one on, Carpenter hit for himself and got a 1-2 single. NExt batter got a split of 1 for a single and the next batter walked to load the bases before Maddox got the 3rd out on an x play grounder.  In the 10th, McGriff doubled and Martinez singled him in to give the Padres the 4-3 win.  Hurst era stayed about the same (1.38) and he has allowed 45 hits in 84 2/3 innings on the year.

game 2: Cards had 9 baserunners for the game, 6 in the 4th inning when they scored 4 times. After an out, walk, single, walk, single, double and walk did the damage. McGriff hit a 2 out 9th inning homer to break up the shutout as the Cards won 4-1.

game 3: Padres used 3 consecutive hits in the first to jump to a 2-0 lead. Cards got it right back in the bottom of the inning with a 2 out single+error plating the 2nd run.  A 3-2 lead in the 5th got much larger as the Cards got 4 runs on 3 hits, 2 walks and an error.  Padres added runs in the 7th and 9th to make the final 7-4. Game ended with a runner being thrown out at 3rd on a 20.

game 4: Another runner trying to advance, another 20 in this one for SD. Pete OBrien followed up a 4-5 day yesterday with a 2-3 performance with a 2 run homer in the 2nd that put St Louis up 2-1. Padres tied it in the third on a Fernandez triple and Gwynn double. ANother x play single played a key role in the Cards go ahead run in the 7th and the Cards held on for the 3-2 win.

For those following along, Benes walked 1 to go with OBrien's home run.  Benes and Harris have now pitched 142 2/3 innings and allowed 23 walks and 23 home runs.
