Subject: BAA @ OAA Week 9
Orioles take 3 of 4 in what should have been a sweep. (No new CM again this week.) Game 1: BAA 8, OAA 4 There was offense aplenty in the first inning. Back-to-back doubles by Joe Orsulak and Craig Biggio started a 3-run rally as Baltimore batted around against Bob Welch. Rick Sutcliffe must have let down his guard, as two walks help set up Dan Pasqua’s grand slam to give the A’s a 4-3 lead. The O’s quickly tied it as a two-base error by Terry Steinbach led to Biggio’s second RBI in as many innings. The O’s retook the lead 6-4 in the 4th, with yet another Biggio RBI and a sac fly by Cal Ripken; recent call-up Craig Worthington added two more with a 5th inning homer. That was it for the scoring for both teams, as the O’s bullpen allowed just a hit and two walks in 2 2/3 IP. Game 2: BAA 2, OAA 1 Oakland’s Mike Moore and Baltimore’s Jim Abbott locked into a pitchers’ duel that neither won. After missed opportunities, the O’s finally got a run in the 5th on a two-out RBI single by Candy Maldonado. In the 8th, when Jerry Browne singled off reliever Mark Williamson, A’s manager Drew Kennedy made a shrewd move by inserting Vince Coleman as a pinch-runner. Coleman stole second and third and scored when Rickey Henderson singled through the drawn-in infield to tie the game 1-1 and deny Abbott (who struck out 10 while yielding just four hits and a walk) the win he deserved. With two out in the top of the ninth, Triple Crown-contending Ripken hit a solo homer to put the Orioles back on top, and Gregg Olson survived a Mark McGwire double to notch the save. Bad move: Orioles manager Charlie Steinhice inserted a pinch-runner just ahead of a double play – for the second game in a row. Game 3: BAA 3, OAA 1 Henderson tripled and scored in the bottom of the first. For a while it looked like that might be enough, as A’s starter Dave Stewart didn’t allow a hit until the fourth. But it was followed by a second, and after Cecil Espy was intentionally walked, Mike Devereaux delivered a clutch bases-clearing double for a 3-1 Baltimore lead. And that *was* enough for Charles Nagy and the O’s bullpen, who dodged bullet after bullet for the win. Game 4: OAA 5, BAA 4 (15) A solo homer by Ripken in the 4th gave the O’s an early lead, bumped up to 2-0 in the 6th as Biggio tripled and scored on a sac fly. Baltimore’s Ben McDonald yielded just one hit in six shutout innings before being pulled to limit his usage. After the Baltimore bullpen survived a shaky 7th, Biggio singled in an insurance run in the 8th, just before Harold Baines tied it with a three-run homer off Todd Frohwirth. That’s where things stood through 14 innings. In the 15th Biggio got yet another RBI hit to give Baltimore the lead, but the O’s were out of rested pitchers and a fatigued Curt Schilling walked in the tying run. In desperation, the O’s inserted fatigued closer Gregg Olson, who gave up a two-out single to John Marzano to give Oakland the win. |
