Subject: Reds @ Dodgers

After last week's road nightmare, the Reds expected to rebound in Los Angeles.  Some rebound....

Game 1: L.A. starter Jim Deshaies was just about literally unhittable (6 IP, 1 hit) but the Reds required 12 innings -- in which we got a total of 3 hits -- to choke completely.  Final score: 4-3.  Timely blown x-plays by the Reds gave the Dodgers all 4 of their runs, though 3 of them were uncharitably scored as "earned".

Cincy's big offensive rally of the day, our 3-run 8th, came during a frame in which we notched just one hit, a single.  Ted Power and Jesse Orosco gave us 3 walks, an HBP and a sac fly.  The hitting star for the Dodgers was Mighty Omar Vizquel, who tallied 3 RBI and plated the losing unearned run in the 12th with a single.

======================================

Game 2: L.A. scored a run in the first on 2 singles, but Randy Myers settled down and put up 6 zeroes on the scoreboard after that.  The Reds failed to show our #1-ranked offense again today, amassing just 5 hits.  One of them was a solo homer by MVP candidate Chris Sabo, who is finally having a banner year after a career of uninterrupted massive underachievement.

With the score 1-1 after 8, Eric Davis delivered a clutch single (!!!) after Paul O'Neill's double and Kevin Gross held the fort in the bottom of the 9th as the Reds escaped with a 2-1 win.

======================================

Game 3: Scott Scudder, pretty much the Reds' only NON-underachieving pitcher, had another quality start and the Cincy batters arrived at last.  Final score: 10-3.  Mark Langston had a rough and brief outing for the Dodgers, and Scudder only weakened slightly in the late innings after becoming bored with a 10-0 lead.

Sabo had another large day (5 3 4 4), adding his 30th and 31st homers of the season to the rout.

The L.A. bullpen fared little better than Langston had, particularly reliever Don August who permitted 5 baserunners and 3 runs in 2.1 innings.  Why is that significant?  Because....

======================================

Game 4: Scheduled Dodger starter Oil Can Boyd was banned from doing so by league rule, leaving the home team no choice but to use.... Don August as their starting pitcher, fatigued and -- look at his card -- highly ineffective though he was very likely to be.

So naturally August had his best outing of the season and earned his first victory against the slumping division leaders.

Not that August actually pitched *well*; the Reds built a quick 3-0 lead, but then HAL noticed that Greg Harris was on the mound for the Reds.  Harris, an Underachiever among underachievers, continued his nightmare of a season even though he didn't pitch all that badly (6 baserunners in 6 IP).

But our 3-0 lead disappeared in the blink of an eye thanks to L.A.'s 4-run third, and arsonist Norm Charlton gave the Dodgers 3 VERY valuable insurance runs to make the score 7-3.  Without that help for our opponent, the 2 runs we scored in the 9th might have resulted in a 5-4 win instead of a 7-5 loss.  The Dodgers' picked a good time to eliminate LOB, stranding just 2 of their 10 baserunners today.

Alan
