Subject: Blue Jays @ Twins

The Jays limped into Minnesota, secure in the knowledge that things couldn't possibly get any worse.  Wanna bet....?

Game 1: Rod Nichols was successfully dodging every bullet that the Twins shot at him, but Toronto's offensive feebleness continued unabated and Nichols carried only a microscopic 1-0 lead into the 8th inning.  In the top of the 8th the Jays had a chance to extend the lead when we got a runner to second with nobody out.  Two outs later and the runner having not budged, the Twins declined to pitch to Joe Carter and IW'd him to bring up John Olerud.

Excellent move: Olerud rolled a 3-2 and would have singled home a run if not for that pesky little '$' choke symbol next to the result.  Some people do VERY well on that slugger's roll of 3-2, as we would fatally discover just a few batters later.

Nichols hit the showers after permitting a 1-out single in the bottom of the 8th.  Not a bad day's work: 7.1 IP, 9 baserunners, 0 runs allowed.

So far.

With Tom Henke deactivated to rest up for the playoffs (ha!) Jason Grimsley made his 1991 debut.  Even in his brief 1990 campaign, Grimsley solidly established himself as one of the most woeful underachievers in the league.  And on it goes but (at least today) it took a LOT of sabotage defense.

Catcher Lance '2e1' Parrish had already allowed the rarely-seen blown-x single earlier in the game and he, Manny Lee, and Grimsley went to work to throw this one away (literally), with Mike Timlin administering the coup de grace.  The Twins didn't need to do any work at all.

Grimsley retired the first batter he faced, and needed just one more to escape the ever-dangerous "man on first only, 2 outs" threat.

With Chili Davis in the process of being walked, Knoblauch stole second and Mr. 2e1 threw the ball into the outfield.  One pitch later Mr. 2e1 choked up a blown-x wild pitch.  Tie game, Davis to scoring position.

Shane Mack bounced an inning-ending x-grounder to Manny Lee.  Who watched it go through his legs.  Parrish was victimized yet again when Mack stole second but at least we didn't tack on an error this time.

Grimsley probably thought he was pitching for an actual major league team, not the Keystone Cops, and he fell apart completely and gave Kent Hrbek first base (the only open one available) on 4 pitches.

Bases loaded, 2 outs.... let's see if someone else can do any better on the mound.

'Someone else' besides Mike Timlin should have been selected.

Brian Harper came to the plate, got that slugger's roll of 3-2 and then got the split card right at the BPHR limit for the Ultimate Perfect Sambito.  A ***Grand Slam*** on Timlin's 5th pitch, making the final score 5-1 after the Jays went down meekly in the 9th.  Three consecutive games a Toronto reliever has given up a game-costing gopher to the first batter he faced.  Another record that may never be broken!

Unless we can make it 4 in a row....

========================================================

Game 2: We had a very good chance to make it 4, two very good chances in fact, but failed.

Tom Candiotti's final road start for the Jays provided two highly unlikely results:

1.  Candiotti pitched well.
2.  The Jays actually won the game.

The only run that the Candy Man allowed came on a 2-out double in the third, but the Jays came back in the 4th when Olerud got Toronto's first good split card in a month and came up with a 2-run homer off of Jack Morris which turned out to be the game-winner.  Jack Howell tripled home an insurance run in the 7th.  Final score: 3-1.

Candiotti pitched into the 9th and Flanagan and Ward each nervously faced one batter -- representing the tying run -- and neither one choked up a gopher!!!  They must be saving it for our home series.

Alan
