In a series played online -- thanks, Mike! -- the Reds swept 3 excruciatingly close games from the Pirates and await the winner of the Detroit-Seattle series.... Game 1: Jose Rijo vs. Greg Maddux and it was the low-scoring tilt that everyone expected. The Reds broke on top in the second when John Kruk drew a 1-out walk and was singled to third by Chris Sabo. Jeff Reed's weak grounder resulted in only a forceout instead of a GIDP and Kruk raced home. Pittsburgh threatened in the 3rd when Rijo flubbed Maddux's grounder and then threw it away, good for a single + error. Rijo then fanned Barry Bonds and retired Jay Bell to halt the threat. The Reds got another run moments later when Reed *did* hit into a DP -- a fly ball on which Eric Davis scored but Kruk was gunned down at second. It was a day for catchers (and DPs): Mike Lavalliere's DP grounder extinguished a Pirate rally in the 4th; Reed nailed Bonds trying to steal in the 6th as Rijo was attempting to unravel (walk, walk, wild pitch). The Buccos broke through in the bottom of the 8th. Jose Lind opened with a single and Rijo exited. Kevin Gross retired the one man he faced and on came Norm Charlton, who got Bonds to hit into a forceout. A sudden case of nerves with a hit sandwiched in between (wild pitch, single, wild pitch) made the score 2-1 and the tying run was at second. Charlton struck out Van Slyke to end the inning and got the Pirates in order in the 9th via 2 more strikeouts. Final score: 2-1. ================================================== Game 2: Tim Belcher vs. Zane Smith. The Reds got to Smith (4.1 IP, 11 baserunners) early and often but weren't scoring any of those runners, and Belcher was limiting the runners (4 IP, 4 baserunners) but not the runs. Neither pitcher made it through five frames. Cincy got 2 hits in the first, scored zero, stranded zero (GIDP, CS); two more runners in the second became LOB. Pittsburgh took control in their 2nd when Orlando Merced doubled to open the inning and Mike Pagliarulo homered over the right field wall. The Reds LOBbed 2 more in the 4th but finally got down to business in the 5th: Von Hayes PH for Belcher and singled and Mariano Duncan & Barry Larkin did likewise and cut the deficit to 2-1. Darrin Jackson then delivered the key blow, a 3-run homer that made the score 4-2 and again the Reds' offense took an early shower, scoring no further today. Smith faced a couple more batters in the 5th before being effectively relieved by Bob Walk, Bill Landrum, Jim Gott & Roger Mason. Randy Myers replaced Belcher for the Reds and only narrowly survived several near-misses; but he eventually combined with Dwight Henry for 4 scoreless innings. Then Rob Dibble came on for the 9th to seal it up. He did, but not without considerable difficulty. Back-to-back 1-out singles by pinch hitters Gary Redus and Carlos Martinez put runners on the corners and Redus scored on Lind's x-grounder to Doran. Dibble didn't walk anyone for a change, but the Pirates made him work some deep counts (19 pitches); finally Don Slaught hit a routine roller to Larkin and the Reds escaped with a 4-3 victory. The series then moved to Riverfront Stadium after an off day for game 3, which gets its own writeup separately. Alan |
