Subject: 1991 ALCS, games one and two.

All games were netplayed yesterday.

---

Still stinging from their 4-0 World Series humiliation at the hands of the reigning champion Reds, the Mariners entered 1991 with a clear managerial edict: win now.  After a 109-win campaign -- easily the best of Seattle's 15 seasons -- hopes were high heading into the 1991 ALCS.

Game one:

Clearly, the Bill Gullickson vs. Jack McDowell matchup had the M's hitters salivating.  During regular-season play, Seattle hitters torched Gullickson at a .441/.500/.706 clip, while McDowell held Detroit hitters to a .214 average in four starts.  With Randy Johnson (6.16 ERA vs. Detroit in '91) and John Burkett (5.11 overall) following him, the ALCS could easily hinge on McDowell -- and it did, as he stood on the mound when the series ended.

Seattle's raucous Kingdome went quiet on the first pitch, as Daryl Boston pulled a three on a 1-3 HR split. 1-0 Tigers.  A solo shot by Hector Villanueva in the second tied the game.  An RBI single by Mickey Tettleton plated Tony Phillips in the third, 2-1 Tigers. Travis Fryman took McDowell deep in the sixth for a two-run shot, 4-1 Tigers.

Seattle put men on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a single an a Fryman error, but three outfield flies would only yield one run -- the last one the Mariners would muster.   Detroit added two in the ninth, Gullickson got one out in the ninth before yielding to Mike Henneman, who put it on ice.  Detroit takes lead in the series, 1-0.

Game two:

In a short series, Seattle started to feel the pressure down 1-0, especially with Johnson going against Walt Terrell.  Straight-up lefties are so vulnerable to Detroit's potent lineup that Les Lancaster and Brian Holman were ready to warm up at the first sign of trouble.  That trouble never surfaced.

Seattle's line score tells the story: 1 1 3 0 2 2 2 0.  No crooked numbers, no real hero (on offense); just the war of attrition that Seattle's bats waged on AL opponents all year.  Meanwhile, the Big Unit struck out ten, walked just five, and threw a no-hitter (except against Junior Felix, who went 3-for-4).  One unearned run, 145 pitches, three hits -- and Johnson repeats his role in the '90 ALCS, evening the series at one with a big victory.
