Subject: 1991 World Series is underway
Three online games have been played featuring a total of 48 runs scored, an aggregate batting average of .331 and ERA of 7.83. The overall slugging percentage is .513. Pitchers who think they can do better are encouraged to apply at either team's front office. Game 1: Jose Rijo faced Jack McDowell in the opener at the Kingdome. After that most rare of events -- a scoreless inning -- the bombardment got underway in the second. Cincy catcher Andy Allanson doubled home Eric Davis with the first run of the series but a pair of two-out walks loaded the bases for Paul O'Neill, who cleared them with a Grand Slam. Seattle matched the pair of runs the Reds put up in the 4th, but Cincy tacked on another against McDowell in the 5th and he departed with the score 8-2 against his side. John Kruk singled home run #9 in the 6th and the visitors put 4 more on the board in the 8th off of relievers Trevor Wilson and Les Lancaster. Rijo exited with a seemingly safe 13-2 lead and only 6 outs remaining to get. Randy Myers got one of those outs, then let the next 4 batters score, 3 of them on a Glenn Davis home run. O'Neill added a solo homer in the 9th and Kevin Gross retired the M's in the 9th to preserve the 14-6 win. O'Neill's big day (6 3 4 6) with a double and 2 homers led the way. ================================================================= Game 2: Tim Belcher vs. Randy Johnson on another day where the pitchers (at least the starters) would have preferred to remain anonymous. Joe Oliver's solo homer gave the Reds a 1-0 lead in the second, but Seattle stormed back with 3 runs via Brian Downing's 2-run blast and Mel Hall's RBI single. But RJ immediately got wild, issuing 3 free passes in the 3rd among 2 singles and a double and the Reds rebounded for a 5-3 lead which became 8-3 one frame later (just after Belcher got himself into, and out of, a bases-loaded jam) when Chris Sabo delivered a 3-run homer after the bases had been empty with 2 outs moments earlier. The Mariners bounced back again with a quick pair of runs which cut the Reds lead to 8-5 after 4 innings. Johnson was pulled after 5 innings while Belcher staggered into the 9th, and there was no further scoring aside from Darrin Jackson's solo homer in the Cincy 8th. Final score: 9-5. Chris Sabo was today's hero (5 2 3 5). ================================================================= Game 3: After a day of rest, the teams resumed in Cincinnati where the experts expected an even-worse pitching performance from #3 starters John Burkett and Greg Swindell. The experts were only half right. Swindell got off to just a slightly rocky start after he retired Edgar Martinez to open the game (double, walk, single, RBI single, GRAND SLAM) and Seattle had jumped to to a 5-0 lead before any Cincy batter even had a chance to swing. The Reds got one back in the bottom of the first, and Swindell -- still out there for some reason -- gave it right back before heading for the showers. Gross coughed up 3 more runs for the visitors in the 5th to give them a 9-1 lead and the teams traded runs a few times from there on out. Final score: 10-4. Burkett was as surprisingly impressive as he had been in the ALCS, allowing 8 hits (most of them on blown x plays), no walks and just 1 earned run in 7.1 IP. The Reds used several relievers without any noticeable effectiveness aside from Rob Dibble, who threw 1 pitch in the 9th and got a GIDP, and today's monster performance was turned in by Seattle catcher Hector Villanueva (5 2 4 7) with 2 home runs including the first-inning Slam.
