Subject: 1991 World Series, games 4-6

Game four saw a rematch of Rijo and McDowell, but the Mariners were hoping for a better performance from their ace, who was tagged for eight runs in the opener.  Down 2-1 in the series, Seattle took the lead in the fourth, thanks to a Sam Horn double and a two-run homer by game three's hero, Hector Villanueva.

The Reds quickly chipped away, and soon tied the game at three, thanks to a John Kruk solo shot in the fifth and a two-single by Bill Doran in the sixth.  In the eighth, the Mariners broke the tie with a two-out RBI single by Mel Hall and a quick two-out, two-run homer by Dave Henderson in the eighth.  Edgar Martinez added a seemingly inconsequential homer in the top of the ninth to give Seattle a 7-3 lead going into the ninth inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Doran grounded out against Dennis Eckersley.  Then Darrin Jackson and Barry Larkin homered back-to-back, igniting the crowd and narrowing the Mariners' lead to one.  Seattle summoned Bryan Harvey, who struck out Jeff Reed, but coughed up a solo homer to Chris Sabo.  7-7.

Cincinnati called on Randy Myers to preserve the tie.  Brian Downing singled, and scored on a two-run shot by -- who else? -- Villanueva, his fourth home run in two games.  The tenth devolved into a comedy of errors, as the Reds did everything wrong but balk -- passed ball, wild pitch, fielding error...  When the dust settled, Seattle led 10-7, and Harvey struck out the side -- needing just ten pitches to do so -- to tie the series at two games apiece.

--

Seattle hoped that Randy Johnson could recover some of his regular-season luster after being lit up by the Reds in game two, but game five played out like a carbon copy of its predecessor.  The Reds scored early and often, fueled by a huge day from Joe Oliver (4 2 2 7, with two homers).  Johnson was tattooed for seven runs in 2 2/3 innings, including the homers by Oliver and a solo shot by Barry Larkin.

Seattle rallied for four in the top of the eighth, but it was too little, too late.  Tim Belcher pitched to the score (six earned runs in 7 1/3 innings), and Oliver's seven RBI topped the Mariners' six.  Headed back to he Kingdome, the Mariners faced elimination, trailing the Reds 3-2 in the series.

--

Cincinnati's choice to start RH Greg Harris over Greg Swindell (6 ER in 2 IP in game two) was understandable, and Harris quickly justified his manager's confidence.  Heading into the bottom of the fourth, Harris' only mistake had been a solo homer to Sam Horn in the second, and the score was tied 1-1.  Villanueva homered in the fourth -- eliciting chants of "MVP!  MVP! " by the Kingdome faithful -- and the Mariners added another run on a Luis Rivera RBI single.

But the real story, as in game three, was unlikely ace John Burkett.  Seattle faced elimination thanks largely to nominal one-two starters McDowell (8.18 ERA) and Johnson (17.61).  Burkett was masterful, scattering nine singles and three walks over six innings.

Luck was another major factor for Seattle in game six.  In the second, Cincinnati had two singles and a walk, and no runner made it past first base -- Eric Davis was caught stealing with 20 split card (1-19 safe), and Villanueva threw out Darrin Jackson a batter later.  Split cards killed the Reds' offense in game six; I'm sure Alan can offer more specific examples (if he hasn't repressed them).

Anyway, Horn hit another solo shot, Edgar Martinez (heretofore a non-factor) had three hits, and Seattle collected a 5-1 victory.  The Mariners' fate would by decided by their 175th game.
