Subject: 1991 World Series game seven
So it all came down to a final game. For the third time, game one starters Jack McDowell and Jose Rijo took the mound, and each notched a scoreless first inning.
The Reds drew first blood in the second on John Kruk's second homer of the series. This solo shot put the Reds up one, but the Mariners charged back in the bottom of the inning. A Brian Downing single, a fielder's choice, then three singles an a sac fly led Seattle to a three-run lead. During the season this would feel like an adequate lead, as the Mariners' bullpen corps was one of the best I've managed. But the postseason had been a different story.
Other than a lumbering run (consecutive doubles by Sam Horn and Downing) in the fifth, both teams' bats fell largely silent. But in the top of the sixth, the Reds roared back to life. Hal Morris and Barry Larkin singled, then Paul O'Neill doubled to plate Morris. Chris Sabo put his Rec Specs to work, grounding out to drive in Larkin (Seattle had the infield back) and make it 4-3, Seattle. McDowell, clearly on the ropes, walked Eric Davis; Davis promptly stole second. Darrin Jackson up, men on second and third, two out, Reds down a run, Mariners' bullpen a hive of activity, and: Fly Out To Left Fielder
(BallPark Effect)
(Roll: 3-12)
(Split: HR 1-9, Flyout 10-20)
(Split card selected- 19)
McDowell would last into the eighth, running through the raindrops, fiercely protecting the 4-3 lead. With one down in the penultimate frame, McDowell coughed up a single and stolen base to O'Neill, then a single to Chris F. Sabo, whose series average rose to .533 (and who would be the clear series MVP if the Reds were to prevail).
In came Bryan Harvey, who held opponents to an absurd .166/.250/.240 on the year. Harvey allowed 23.5% of inherited runners to score in '91, and with two men on, he needed two outs. He quickly struck out Kruk, then walked Eric Davis.
Bases loaded, and Harvey is facing Jackson, a man in need of redemption. Jackson struck out. Three outs to go.
Seattle went down in order in the eighth, and in the ninth, Dwight Evans pinch hit for Andy Allanson. It would be the final at-bat of Dwight Evans' remarkable SMILEY career, but he couldn't make contact against Harvey. Two outs to go. Bill Doran struck out. One out to go. Hal Morris singled, stole second. Game seven, two out, bottom of the ninth, tying run on second. Larkin connects, hits it sharply to Luis Rivera, who fields it cleanly and throws him out. Mariners win!
---
Thanks so much to Alan, for being gracious despite awful luck, for suffering through my odd schedule and odder tech issues, and for the amount of work he puts in to make this league the pleasure that it is. Thanks also to the Cubs for Hector Villanueva, who has to be the MVP -- .435/.435/1.130, 5 HR, 14 RBI, and he didn't even play till game three. Runners up are Sabo (.533/.531/.833) and John Burkett (2-0, 1.35, wins when Seattle was down 0-2 and 2-3 in the series).
Bring on '92!
