Subject: BAA @ BOA Week 1
Baltimore went to Fenway to start the 1992 season and came oh-so-close to a sweep but settled for winning two out of three. Game 1: BAA 8, BOA 1 Roger Clemens and Charles Nagy squared off in a pitchers’ duel on Opening Day at Fenway. Neither side scored before Baltimore’s Chico Walker tagged Clemens with a solo homer in the 5th. The Red Sox tied it in the 6th as Rob Deer doubled and scored on a Bob Zupcic single. The Orioles retook the lead in the 7th; after a successful hit-and-run by Mike Devereaux, Randy Milligan hit a would-be sac fly that Zupcic misplayed, setting up a two-run double by Joe Orsulak. Orsulak scored on a Cal Ripken single, and (matching his real total for all of 1992) Chris Hoiles tripled in Ripken to chase Clemens and put Baltimore up 6-1. Reliever Mark Eichhorn gave up an RBI single to Brady Anderson for a six-run Orioles lead. Baltimore added an insurance run in the eighth thanks to a passed ball and two wild pitches, and Nagy held on for a complete game victory. Game 2: BAA 6, BOA 3 Baltimore again drew first blood, as Devereaux hit a sac fly in the 1st off Bob Ojeda. Ojeda got an early shower in the second, as errors by Boston’s Felix Fermin and Junior Ortiz fueled a four-run Orioles rally, although Ortiz atoned with a two-run single to make the score 5-2 after two innings. Orioles starter Mike Mussina dodged bullet after bullet, with the score still 5-2 when he left in the 6th. Ripken added an RBI single in the 7th, and a Red Sox rally in the 9th produced just one run on an RBI groundout. Game 3: BOA 9, BAA 8 Boston got its first lead of the season in the 3rd, 1-0, as Rob Deer took Orioles starter Ben McDonald deep. In the 4th, Baltimore tied it with an unearned run, but Boston answered with a sac fly by Scott Cooper, and a 5th inning RBI single by Tom Brunansky made the score 3-1 Red Sox. McDonald left in the 6th with the bases loaded, and Orioles reliever Scott Bankhead yielded a walk, a hit batsman, and a sac fly to put Boston up 6-1. However, in the 7th Baltimore finally chased Red Sox starter Mike Gardiner with three straight singles. Eichhorn allowed a 2-run Ripken single and balked in another run, and the O’s cut the lead to 6-5 before stranding three more runners. Still in the 7th, Mo Vaughn gave Boston some breathing room with a solo homer. The Orioles were down to their last out when Randy Milligan jacked a three-run homer off Derek Lilliquist to put the Birds ahead. Enter Baltimore closer Gregg Olson, who gave up the lead on an inside-the-park home run by Tom Brunansky and then threw a game-ending wild pitch. |
