Subject: Reds @ Cubs
A clash of opposites: Cincy's top-ranked pitching vs. Chicago's top-ranked offense. Those units battled to a draw while the Cincy offense took advantage of the Cubs' bottom-ranked pitching. Only yet another costly demonstration by the team which invented and perfected the "Perfect Sambito" averted what should have been a sweep.... Game 1: By the second inning the Reds were already a typical 0 for 4 with RISP, so the Cubs showed us how clutch hitting works by plating 2 RISP with back-to-back doubles to take a 2-1 lead. But then a funny thing happened -- Pete Harnisch, who is normally super-tough on the Reds (a .203 *ON-BASE* percentage in '91, his best against any opponent), unraveled in a major way in the 4th. He allowed 5 singles before issuing 2 bases-loaded walks, one of which was to pitcher Greg Swindell. Then Harnisch completed the 8-run outburst with a Grand Slam to light-hitting Bill Doran. Apparently either Harnisch or reliever Jim Bullinger was using Cincy batters for target practice (unsuccessfully), because Swindell racked up 3 HBP from that point on and then dodged most bullets to wind up with a very shaky 10-5 complete-game win. Every Cincy batter got a hit except Swindell, who walked twice, scored a run & drove one in. The teams combined for at least 4 runners gunned down on the bases. ================================================ Game 2: CIN starter Chris Hammond was given a 3-0 lead before he set foot on the mound, and he never let it get away. Hammond left that job to the eminently-qualified Cincinnati Arson Squad. With the score 4-2 in the 8th, Unhittable Dennis Rasmussen was anything but (single, gopher), and the game-long lead was suddenly gone in a flash. So was the ballgame, when Dwayne Henry came in at that point and took just 3 pitches to choke it away & make Joe Sambito proud. Final score: 5-4. Four Cubbie pitchers held the Reds to 5 hits and pretty much zero offense after Darrin Jackson's 3-run homer in the first, but it still required a monster choke to lose this one. ================================================ Game 3: A near-repeat of the opener, as every Cincy batter got a hit except pitcher Tim Belcher (he didn't even draw a walk) but that was OK because unlike Swindell, Belcher actually pitched well. Final score: 8-1, and we LOBbed 10 more. Paul O'Neill's solo homer in the 1st got the ball rolling, and Belcher didn't allow a run until the score was 7-0 in the 7th. Series notes: MVP candidate Ryne Sandberg got hits in all 3 games, but was limited to a 3 for 12 performance; Cincy's unaccountably victimized defense continues to rebound, going 9 for 10 on x-plays in the series and is now finally up to the league average in x-%.
