Padres take the bookends in the series
game 1: After 2 outs in the first, Clark beat out an x-play roller and Sheffield followed with a 2 run homer to give the Padres the early lead. Expo came back with a run in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd to take the 3-2 lead. Stayed that way until the 8th inning. Discarcina led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout. Sheffield came up and rolled his 1 column.. too bad it was 1-9 as just about anything else would have scored the runner. Rojas is summoned from the bullpen and nearly pulls off "the Sambito". McGriff rolls hr 1-16 (on his card) and draws the 17 for a tying double. In the 9th, Discarcina singled in Fernandez for the 4-3 win.
game 2: No drama in this one thanks to a surgical 3rd inning for Montreal. 6 hits, a walk and a 2 base error lead to 6 runs. The first out of the inning was a runner thrown out at the plate on a hit by the 7th batter of the inning. Discarcina again provided the offensive highlight for SD as he hit his first SMILEY homerun. Montreal cruised to a 9-3 win as Greg Harris was battered around.
game 3: SD uses its own big inning to put this one away early. McGriff homered in the 2nd and his 2 run single in the 3rd was the last of 5 batters to reach to start a 4 run inning. Meanwhile, Bruce Hurst was dominating the Expos again. A week after allowing no hits, he allowed just 2 in 7 innings. Foolishly, I left him in for the 8th and he allowed a single and double to start the inning before a pair of groundouts scored both runners. Habyan closed out the 5-2 win for his 5th save of the season (and 2nd of the series).
For the week SD allowed 41 runs and a pair of 9 run games when they had allowed just 124 runs (with no 9 run games) in the first 35.
