A team with first place talent and last place luck (and the .500 record which goes with that combo) faces the most ridiculously overachieving team in the majors. What happens when a team with terminally rotten luck meets a team with fantastic good fortune that is on pace to win over 30 more games than its talent deserves? Exactly what you think would happen, that's what.... Game 1: Tim Pugh made his major-league debut for the Reds, and HAL wasted no time in welcoming him. The Padres found all the weak spots on Pugh's card and built an immediate 3-0 lead on the way to a 4-0 win. The Reds did not lack for baserunners against SDN starter Andy Benes, out-LOBbing the Pads 9-5 even while hitting into 3 costly double plays. =============================================== Game 2: Chris Hammond, one of just two Cincy starters who actually knows how to win a game in 1992, averted the sweep by pitching fairly well again and getting some support in the form of 3 home runs -- TWO of which he hit himself. Final score: 8-3. The contest started typically enough with the Reds down 3-1 after 2 innings, but Eddie Taubensee's first major-league homer was a big one -- a Grand Slam with 1 out in the 4th which turned the tables. Hammond's second homer of the game, a 2-run blast in the 9th, was irrelevant yet entertaining. =============================================== Game 3: And now back to our regularly scheduled program. Batting practice starter Jimmy Jones wasn't exactly a mystery to the Reds batters (6.1 IP, 11 baserunners, 5 runs) but the outcome was in no doubt after the second inning. That's when Cincy scrub Jose Rijo reported for surgery and turned our 2-0 lead into a 5-2 deficit in a frame which featured 2 gophers, 2 errors and 2 other hits. Final score: 9-5. The Reds had cut the deficit to 7-5 in the 7th but that was merely the cue for the Arson Squad to go to work and put the game away. Super-zoid Tommy Gregg gets only 20 AB this year but he sure paid off today, his 3-run gopher during Rijo's surgery providing the crushing blow. Alan |
