Subject: Reds @ Dodgers
Teams with just a fraction of the Reds talent routinely come into Los Angeles and leave happy, the Dodgers having failed to win a home series since Week 1 against the Mets. But good fortune smiled on the Dodgers this week, as the unluckiest team in the history of the league made a visit.... Game 1: A hit machine named Kirk McCaskill took a shutout into the 9th inning, while Greg Swindell died during 5th inning surgery. The Reds did things like commit 2-base errors on bunt plays with the non-hitting pitcher at the plate and give up incredible split card homers to mighty sluggers such as Curtis Wilkerson. The split cards were a cruel joke all series long, as always; see game 4 for a particularly good laugh. Final score today: 7-1. ================================================= Game 2: Facing a good pitcher today (Mark Langston) the Cincy offense was typically inert, as once again we allowed an L.A. starter to take a shutout into the late innings. Tim Pugh's 3rd major league start was better than his first 2 (6 IP, 6 baserunners, 3 runs) and lowered his ERA to a mere jumbo jet 7.47 -- but it was hardly good enough. Final score: 4-1. ================================================= Game 3: A very temporary break from the most dismal luck imaginable, as Jose Rijo came one scratch single away from a no-hitter and the offense really poured it on today, scoring 3 runs (though 2 were unearned). Final score: 3-0. ================================================= Game 4: Tim Belcher had a 2-0 lead in the 6th, when a blown-x play by a Gold Glove caliber second baseman with 2 outs and nobody on base suddenly initiated 5 runs worth of surgery. After the botched hit (split card: 2) Cory Snyder came up with a gopher (split card: 2) and the next 4 Dodgers reached base too before that ever-elusive final out could be recorded. Final score: Dr. HAL 5, Reds 2. Cincy's rock-bottom luck resulted in a hilarious new low (or, rather, "high") in split cards over the last two games. Going back to the end of game 3, the CIN *AVERAGE* split card at the plate was 16. The sequence of the last 16 has to be a record -- and check out the amazing consistency of the final six -- 19, 10, 18, 14, 15, 19, 15, 15, 4, 15, 20, 20, 19, 17, 18, 19.
