Subject: Blue Jays @ White Sox
Jays get zero breaks in game 1, otherwise it's a sweep. The Toronto bullpen's contribution to this series was 1 batter away from the minimum (0.1 IP), and that's always a good thing.... Game 1: Two CHA batters got back-to-back 1-10 chances at gophers in the first inning. Of course they got 2 good split cards. TOA had 2 chances, got a 20 and an 18. And that's the ballgame -- final score: 2-1. The Jays finally dented the scoreboard in the 9th and had the tying run in scoring position with 0 outs. He never moved, and Tim Fortugno got stuck with another no-luck loss and a 4-hit complete game. Hittable Rick Sutcliffe held Toronto's puny offense to 3 hits in 8 IP. Eight times today a Blue Jay strode to the plate with a runner in scoring position (including 4 times in the 9th), and delivered one hit. =============================================== Game 2: Toronto's offense eventually came to life to some degree, building a mere 18-6 advantage in total bases -- so naturally the game was tied 3-3 after 7. Seven of those total bases plus 3 walks in the 8th and 9th finally enabled us to eke out a 6-3 win. Bobby Witt went the distance, walking 7 but allowing only 6 hits, all singles. Witt blew leads of 2-0 and 3-1 but held on until the cavalry arrived. =============================================== Game 3: A rare day when it was our opponent who had some difficulty in the clutch, as Jack Morris tossed 8.2 innings and allowed just 1 run (unearned) because the White Sox LOBbed 11 to our 3. After 2 outs and nobody on in the bottom of the 9th, Morris just HAD to get the tying run to the plate -- and he did -- but Tom Henke must have received the Heimlich Maneuver *before* taking the mound for a change, and he calmly fanned Frank Thomas to end the contest instead of choking up the game-tying gopher. Final score: 4-1. Massively underachieving Blue Jay (it's a very large club) first baseman John Olerud followed his 4 for 5 day yesterday with a 3 for 4 performance including a homer today, lifting his average from .195 to .219 over the two games. =============================================== Game 4: A ***VERY*** rare day, when the Toronto offense flashed a brief glimpse of its 1992 abilities, mainly in the form of a bunch of unnecessary runs (where were they in game one?). Final score: 15-1. Total bases: 34-5. The Jays wasted little time in dispatching CHA starter Orel Hershiser, and the 5 pitchers who followed were generally not a lot better except for Bobby Thigpen. A few of the Jays' super-slumpers took advantage of the hitting conditions today, though we still have scads of sub-.250 types (Lee, Vizcaino, Borders, Bell, White, Kent, Carter and the ones listed below -- basically just the catchers, infield and outfield). But today these 4 guys shook off some of that season-long rust: Greg Myers (.149): 5 for 5, 5 RBI, 2 doubles Greg Briley (.212): 4 for 5, 4 runs scored John Olerud (.219): 2 for 6, double, homer Scott Livingstone (.241): 3 for 5, 4 RBI, 2 doubles Even Charlie Leibrandt (95 IP, 3.13 ERA despite being already up to his 200 IP allotment of gophers allowed) got rewarded for pitching well, scattering 5 singles and notching his second win in just 11 weeks.
