Subject: 1992 ALCS Games 1 & 2
In their first playoff appearance in nineteen years, the Orioles went to Seattle and showed some nerves but managed a 1-1 split. Game 1: SEA 6, BAA 4 Seattle wasted no time in taking the lead as Kenny Lofton led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a Willie Randolph single before Baltimore starter Curt Schilling had retired a batter. The Orioles tied it in the second as David Segui drove in Chito Martinez with a sac fly. In the fifth, Segui homered, something he had failed to do even once in the regular season, to put the visitors up 2-1. Brady Anderson’s solo HR in the sixth was equally unlikely – he challenged Junior Griffey’s arm to score an inside-the-park homer. Score through 6: Orioles 3, Mariners 1. In the 7th, Rich Gossage took over for Seattle starter Jack McDowell, and the O’s made it 4-1 as Segui scored on Anderson’s sac fly. But in the bottom of the 7th, Schilling persuaded Orioles manager Charlie Steinhice to leave him in, then yielded a walk and a two-run homer to Paul Sorrento, cutting the O’s lead to 4-3. Alan Mills took over in relief and gave up four straight hits, including a critical pinch-hit double by Reggie Jefferson, to give the Mariners a 6-4 lead. Steinhice erred again in the 8th after Chito Martinez doubled, opting not to use a pinch-runner, and Martinez was thrown out at the plate by Kenny Lofton. The O’s did their best to manufacture a rally by Seattle in the bottom of the inning (error, balk, and HBP in succession), but Jay Buhner drew an unfavorable split that turned a possible two-run shot into a noisy out. In the top of the 9th, Gossage gave up a single and a walk. With two speedy pinch-runners ( overcompensation?), the O’s liked their chances with Ripken, Anderson, and Biggio as the next three batters. Oh, wait, here comes Dennis Eckersley. Popup, strikeout, strikeout, game over. Game 2: BAA 3, SEA 2 Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina squared off in quite a pitchers’ duel. Seattle spotted the Orioles a two-base error to start the 1st, but the O’s left the bases loaded. The top of the second started with another two-base error, and this time Ripken managed a sac fly for a 1-0 Baltimore lead. Leo Gomez added a two-out single in the 3rd, but Lofton tripled in Buhner to cut the Orioles’ lead to 2-1. Mike Devereaux took Johnson deep to make it 3-1, and the O’s made Mussina look better than he was pitching by turning double plays in the 4th, 5th , and 6th. The O’s defense also bailed out reliever Arthur Rhodes in the 8th when Jefferson hit another pinch-hit double but Joe Orsulak nailed Buhner at the plate, just before Lofton drove in Jefferson to put the Mariners within a run. With the home crowd poised for another comeback win, Gregg Olson took the mound for the O’s in the ninth and for once delivered a 1-2-3 inning to preserve the win. Seattle outhit Baltimore 9-4, but the O’s gave up no walks while drawing six from Johnson. Meanwhile, Mussina will be taking the defense out for dinner when the team returns to Baltimore. |
