Subject: Reds @ Cubs
The unluckiest team in the universe again plays nowhere near its talent level and turns a week that should have been closer to 6-0 into 0-6.... Game 1: Daryl Kile's card isn't exactly unhittable, except for today of course. The Reds managed a whopping 3 baserunners which resulted in 3 different outcomes: one got erased on a timely DP, one was LOBbed and the other actually scored (!). That run cut the Cubs lead to 2-1 in the 6th, so it naturally served as the cue for Jeff Brantley to fall apart. Final score: 5-1. The Reds were prohibited by law from rolling anything but Worst Possible Columns against Kile. Brantley's ultra-nightmare of a season continued unabated with him suffering 4 gopher bites today, as the wind at Wrigley mysteriously commenced blowing out hard whenever the home team was at bat. ============================================= Game 2: Cincy amassed more hits in the first inning today than we did in all of game 1, and set a team record for most non-atrocious split cards in one inning (2) -- but we'd sure pay for that later. The Reds had a 6-1 lead in the 4th, and anyone who follows the Reds knows exactly what happened next.... Cubs win, 8-7. Four runs in the CHN 7th, all scored after 2 outs (natch) blew the lead but the Reds tied it up in the 8th. So that rookie ace arsonist Todd Sambito-Jones could choke up the game-losing gopher leading off the bottom of the 9th. ============================================= Game 3: John Smiley pitched reasonably well (6 IP, 2 runs) but took his first loss (of many more to come) as a Red when he gave up a 2-run single to a .210 hitter in the 5th inning after the one walk he issued all day was generously supplied to a .000-hitting pitcher. Reds find a way to lose yet another close one, 2-1. The "offense" chipped in with 15 strikeouts and a robust 0 for 8 performance with RISP, including 0 for 3 in the 9th after the first 2 batters reached base. Alan |
