The Orioles looked uglier than the Metrodome itself for the first two games, but still somehow escaped Minnesota with a 2-1 series win. Game 1: MNA 5, BAA 3 (11) The Orioles’ Craig Biggio drew a two-out walk in the first but was caught stealing – an omen of things to come. Todd Benzinger hit a two-run homer off Sid Fernandez to give Baltimore a 2-0 lead in the 3rd. Orioles starter Joe Magrane had allowed only one hit when he was pulled from a 6th inning jam for reliever Alan Mills. Mills ended the Twins rally, but had a disastrous 7th – single + (Mills’ own) error, RBI double, and (2 outs later) a two-run homer by Pedro Munoz to giver Minnesota a 3-2 lead. The Orioles tied it in the 8th as Mike Devereaux walked, stole second, and scored on a Benzinger single, but failed to score on a suicide squeeze and ended the inning when Luis Mercedes was caught stealing. Incredibly, the O’s tried again in the top of the 9th -- Biggio was caught stealing after a leadoff single. But in the bottom of the 9th, Biggio started a key 4-6-3 double play that ended a Twins rally to salvage extra innings. After the O’s left the based loaded in the 10th, in the 11th Minnesota’s Shane Mack drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and advanced to 3rd on a groundout. Steve Buechele fouled off two squeeze attempts and was forced to swing away… and he connected for a walkoff 2-run blast. Game 2: BAA 9, MNA 8 The Orioles loaded the bases in the first with no outs, but after a popout and a strikeout, it took a two-out single by Cal Ripken to put the O’s on the board, 2-0. In the 3rd, Chris Hoiles doubled with two on to drive in Devereaux, but Biggio was thrown out at the plate (on an 85% chance of scoring.) Sherman Obando then singled, and Hoiles wisely did NOT try to score (55%), setting up a sac fly by Ripken to make it 4-0. In the 4th, the O’s loaded the bases again, but the outcome was different – Hoiles hit a grand slam that finally ended Twins starter Jim Deshaies’ night. It turned out that the Orioles needed those insurance runs in a hurry, as the Twins batted around against Curt Schilling in the bottom of the 4th for a 5-run rally capped by a three-run Buechele homer. In the top of the 7th, Todd Benzinger doubled in Ripken for a 9-5 Orioles lead. Again, the O’s needed that cushion before that inning was through – Kirby Puckett hit a two-run doubled and scored to cut the lead to one run, and the Twins rally ended only when Chili Davis unwisely tried to steal on a 35% chance. After all that drama, it was anticlimactic when Gregg Olson pitched a perfect 9th for the save. (In fairness, Chuck Knoblauch drew a split card of 4 when a 3 or below would have produced a game-tying homer.) Game 3: BAA 9, MNA 1 Brady Anderson doubled to lead off the game and scored on a single by Devereaux. In the 2nd, Minnesota’s Brian Harper looked like an Oriole as he was thrown out at the plate trying to score (60% chance) on a Buechele double, but the Twins tied it in the 3rd as Puckett doubled in Knoblauch. In the 5th, the O’s retook the lead on a two-run single by Anderson and added two more on doubles by Harold Baines and Mike Pagliarulo; two innings later, Biggio made it 7-1 when he homered with Devereaux on. Ninth inning RBI singles by Hoiles and David Segui tacked on the last two runs. Baltimore starter Greg Swindell wasn’t exactly masterful, but he pitched out of multiple jams to allow just one run in six innings, and the Orioles bullpen gave up no run or hits (albeit five walks) in three IP. |
