Sox sweep or is it Sox swept? Ok, both teams are the Sox so both have to be true. The Red ones go into hibernation the first 2 before breaking out in game 3 to avoid the sweep. To paraphrase the old saying, if it weren't for bad splits, Boston would get no splits. Boston had 3 runners at the plate (13,15, and 17) and drew splits of 18,19,18. Somehow the last one actually beat the play at the plate and scored. In game 3, Boston got a hr/triple split and couldn't score the runner from first (modified down to a 2b).
game 1: Clemens went the distance and allowed just 4 hits. Unfortunately, being Clemens, 2 of them were solo homers and Chicago won 2-1. A third hit was a double (missed the low hr chance that time) and the 4th was a bp single. Clemens has now allowed 15 homers in just over 1/3 of the season. Meanwhile the Boston offense only managed 5 hits. With 2 outs in the first, Vaughn singled and was gunned at the plate on Coles double to end the inning. They managed a run in the 3rd on Lind's double. In the 8th, Boston actually was successful on a bunt(popped up on an earlier attempt and now are 14-22 on the year) and it came back to bite them. The bunt got the runner to third and the next batter hit a gb(x) to Frank Thomas at 1b. Being a 4e17 the odds of scoring were good. Of course the runner at third was gunned at the plate and Boston went on to lose 2-1.
game 2: Joe Hesketh and Mark Portugal matched up in a good one. Portugal allowed 4 hits in 6 2/3 inning and Hesketh just 5 in 7 innings. The extra hit was the difference as it was a solo homer by ex Sox Ellis Burks. Burks ended up with 4 of Chicago's 7 hits in the game. Chicago added a run off of Eichorn in the 8th to win 2-0.
game 3: If you were told the final score was 12-2 and one team had made 4 errors in the first 3 innings you would think it was the losing team wouldn't you? The once mighty Boston D put up the errors and the much maligned Boston offense but up the 12 runs. Kirby led off the game with a double, moved to 3rd on a grounder and tried to score on another grounder. Silly me for sending him on a 1-15 chance (see above). CHicago scored a run on an error, sb+error and groundout. Boston batted around in the 2nd (actually 10 men to the plate). Coles 3 run homer was the big blow in the 5 run inning. Vaughn added a 3 run homer in the 6th and the rout was on. In the 7th, Vaughn got a lineout max with the bases loaded and no outs but it was only a double play. Next batter got a single+error to drive in 2 runs. Chicago got a run off Henke in the 9th to make the final 12-2. 6 Boston players had multi-hit games as they got 17 hits total.
