Subject: Blue Jays @ A's

The most talented team in the A.L. East visits the team with the worst record (not anymore) in the majors, and our league-leading lucklessness was on full display from start to finish.  As always, *nobody* chokes like the Blue Jays, and *nobody* finds a way to lose to far inferior teams like we do (see also "Reds, Cincinnati")....

Game 1: Today the Jays made a hero out of scrub pitcher Dave Eiland (6.2 IP, 0 runs), as we LOBbed 12 runners and our Keystone Cops defense (led as ever by the hilarious DP combo of Jose Vizcaino and blown-x machine Robbie '1e15' Alomar) committed one howler after another.  Final score: 5-2.

Slugging infielder Brent Gates was the offensive hero for the outmanned but surely not out-lucked A's, doubling his season home run total from 2 to 4 and going 3 for 3 with 3 runs & 3 RBI.  In the stat that nobody beats us at, we dominated Oakland 9-2 in the RLISP 2-Out category as Toronto's clutch chokers were sadly *not* in rare form.

===================================================================

Game 2: Oakland's Pete Schourek didn't pitch well by anyone's standards other than his own, giving up 5 runs but *lowering* his season ERA to 7.59 in the process.  Toronto's Pat Borders was today's unlikely hitting hero, putting up the almost Brent Gates-ian line of 4 for 4 with 4 RBI.

Schourek left after 8 innings with the score 5-0 against him, all set to take the loss (he didn't), and it looked like Borders' effort would be sufficient (it wasn't).  Nobody chokes like the Blue Jays.

Jim Abbott's shutout lasted just a few more pitches (single, single, surgical split card gopher, shower) and the disaster was well underway.  Enter Superchoker Duane Ward -- the closer with the unhittable card and the ERA now approaching 5.0 -- to finish the job.

Ward retired 2 batters before a split-card triple threatened to cut our lead down to 1, and HAL must have figured (correctly) that Kurt Abbott wouldn't deliver the 2-out RBI so he turned Borders from hero to goat by having him donate a critical run-scoring passed ball.

Ward made the dreaded bottom of the 9th a repeat of his performance in the 8th, but this time he didn't need any help from Borders.  What he did need, after allowing 2 singles, was a perfectly timed 2-out blown-x by Vizcaino that plated the tying run and kept the inning alive so Ward could choke up one final single and nail the coffin shut.  Final score: a 5-0 lead in the 8th becomes a 6-5 final, in just another routine performance by the master.

===================================================================

Game 3: Today's mediocrity turned sudden Cy Young candidate was Ron Darling, who went the distance and allowed the woefully underachieving Blue Jay offense just 1 run.  But woefully underachieving 19-game winner (real life, sure as hell not here) Pat Hentgen matched him every step of the way and the contest was tied 1-1 from the second inning through the 9th.  The *top* of the 9th, that is.

Toronto had a chance to break the tie when a runner tried to score from first on a 2-out double in the 8th, but a split card was required for a play at the plate so obviously he was out.

Hentgen's 115 pitches in 8 innings were deemed to be enough, so Jesse Orosco -- one of our not yet woefully underachieving players, but he's getting around to it -- came in and promptly choked up a leadoff double.  Willie Wilson pinch-ran and sauntered over to third on a well-placed groundout.

Wilson may have been a threat to steal home once upon a time but those days are gone, or HAL must have figured that Oakland's next 2 batters wouldn't have delivered (we'll never know), so he simply had Orosco balk the losing run home without taking a chance on using those pesky dice rolls to do it.  Final score: 2-1.
