another series, another sweep for the SD opponent. At least we are finding new, not necessarily exciting, ways to lose
game 1: Padres got runs in the first and third and rode the strong pitching of Jason Grimsley (ok.. you can stop laughing now) to that 2-0 lead after 6 innings. Grimsley departed and Storm Davis came on in the 7th. Walk, sb, single, sb+error, sac fly and the game was tied. In the 8th, the Padres made sure that the Marlins would get the winning runs and made sure they would be unearned by committing not 1, not 2, but 3 errors in the inning to lose 4-2.
game 2: Andy Ashby took the mound for SD and pitched more like he was supposed to all year. He gave up 3 runs in the first 2 innings and then settle down for awhile. Caminiti hit a 2 run homer in the 4th but Ashby gave that back in the 6th. In the 7th, it was the Marlins turn to play hot potato as they committed 2 errors that helped the Padres tie the game. Mark Clark came on to face the righties and got the first 2 before allowing a Redus homer. Padres were down to their last out in the 9th when Discarsina got an 8 on a 1b 1-8 and Gwynn followed with a double to tie the game. Clark again got the first 2 outs before Redus doubled and then scored on a Carr single to give the Marlins the 7-6 win.
game 3: Andy Benes and Chris Hammond faced each other but this one quickly became the Derek Bell show, and not in a good way. In the first, Bell had a throwing error that allowed a run to score and immediately followed that up with a single+error for another run. That batter would score on a ground out and it was quickly 3-0. They added 2 in the 2nd and cruised to a 6-1 win. Phil Clark was "credited" with a rlisp in the 9th even though he drew a walk as a pinch hitter. Chad Curtis meanwhile was credited with 4. He left the bases loaded in the 7th and, just to show it wasn't a fluke, ended the game with them loaded.
Sad fact of the week: Derek Bell is on pace to make 32 errors for the year (12 in 60 games). Not sure what the record is for an outfielder but that has to be close.
