Subject: Reds @ Expos
Pity that poor, luckless team from north of the border -- not the truly and totally luckless squad from Ontario, the one from Quebec that wins well over 60% of its games. The Expos don't really need any pity, but the Reds certainly felt sorry for them for some misguided reason, and donated a pair of unearned and undeserved wins to their cause. Seeing as how the Reds, the most underachieving team in the N.L., struggle massively with the likes of powerhouses such as the Marlins and Padres, taking on the best team in the East was certain to be a disaster even without our generous nature.... Game 1: The Expos took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd, capped by a throwing error that gifted the home team an "earned" run, but the resilient Reds rebounded with a 2-run homer by Felix Jose and an RBI single from .105-hitting pitcher Tim Pugh (whose average isn't much worse than our #3 hitter). Pugh was lifted during a rally (a double sandwiched between 2 outs IS a rally for the Reds) in the 7th, and pinch-hitter Hal Morris delivered the RBI that gave Cincy a 4-3 lead. A lead! Against the mighty Expos! But of course: the Reds can't choke away a lead if we never get one. And it didn't take very long. A 2-base blown-x gaffe by SS Jeff Branson plated the tying unearned run from second in the MON 8th (a 1-base gaffe simply wouldn't have been sufficient), then the Reds got a leadoff triple in the 9th and therefore naturally failed to score. It took all of one pitch in the bottom of the 9th to complete the choke on a gopher by Ron Karkovice. Reds give it away by the margin of a single unearned run, 5-4. However our generosity today was nothing at all compared to.... ========================================================= Game 2: The Reds opened this contest by LOBbing 2 RISP in the first and then seeing the Expos turn their 2 baserunners into a run in the bottom of that frame. In the second, Montreal's 7th batter of the day benefitted from Cincinnati's 2nd error of the day and that was parlayed into FOUR critical unearned runs when a surgical split-card gopher with, naturally, 2 outs made the score 5-0. The Reds fought back with a run in the 4th, but that completed the scoring for the day. CIN starter John Smiley's outing was a brief and painful one through no fault of his own, but reliever Johnny Ruffin was spectacular since there was zero chance of us actually winning the game: 5 IP, 0 hits, 1 BB, 8 strikeouts. Final score: 4-0 in unearned runs, 1-1 in earned runs, 5-1 altogether. ========================================================= Game 3: it's understandable that the unluckiest team in the league would get demoralized from time to time, and after the preceding two undeserved defeats the Reds decided to just phone this one in. But not right away: the Reds pounced for 2 runs on 3 hits in the first inning before HAL put us back in our place, and we amassed a mere 3 baserunners over the final 8 frames. Another surgical split-card gopher halved our lead in the 3rd, and although the Reds bunched our only 2 remaining hits into the 5th inning we typically failed to score, and then reported for surgery and choked up 5 hits in the space of 6 batters just seconds later. One final superfluous surgical split-card gopher in the MON 8th made it a 5-2 final. Despite being outhit by a whopping 12-5, the Reds rose to the challenge and made it a close battle in the LOB department. Alan |
