Subject: Reds @ Dodgers
The unluckiest team in the league does it again -- losing a series that any other team would likely have swept.... Game 1: Bobby Ayala made his first start of 1993 and fit right in immediately, allowing 4 of the first 5 Dodger batters to reach base, hitting into a DP in his first at bat, then committing a 2-base error on his first fielding chance. Welcome to the club. The Reds LOBbed the bases loaded in the first (without scoring, natch) and would eventually rack up 9 LOB for the day. It would have been quite a few more than 9 LOB except for our ingenious way of minimizing them: by hitting (or running) into ***SIX*** double plays! We had baserunners galore (10 hits, 7 walks) but, in even more luckless fashion than usual, were obviously unable to translate them into many runs. Down 5-1 in the 8th, the Reds cut the deficit to 5-3 even though DP #5 occurred in that frame. In the 9th, we got the tying run into scoring position with 1 out. But first base was empty -- how to achieve the DP? No problem: just fly out and have an easy chance to tag up and score. Then draw a 20 (how fitting) to gun him down and end the game. Final score: 5-3. ========================================================= Game 2: Only 1 GIDP today so therefore 11 LOB (when just 10 simply wouldn't have been sufficient), but Cincy starter Kevin Gross hung in there and reliever Steve Foster did too, allowing us to erase the 2-0 deficit and tie the contest in the 6th. Interrupting a run of surgical split cards that exclusively favored L.A., Andre Dawson gave the Reds the lead with a solo homer in the top of the 9th. Only 3 outs left to get. These are the Reds; the interruption was quite temporary. We got one of those three outs, then HAL served up three consecutive fortuitous splits including a devastating triple, and the game was over. Reds choke by the score of 4-3, and resume our natural place as the team with the worst record in the majors in 1-run games. ========================================================= Game 3: Ricky Bones has led a charmed life in Los Angeles so far in 1993, but somehow the Reds were able to find the numerous hits on his card and jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and -- stop the presses!!! -- didn't blow it. Despite a surgical attack on Cincy starter Tim Pugh in the 7th, our 8-1 lead at the time became merely an 8-4 final rather than a typical monster choke. Our 2-out rally in the 7th plated 3 runs and understandably angered the Strat Gods, so Pugh was immediately sacrificed (gopher, single, single, single, single, shower) but rookie reliever Larry Luebbers somehow avoided his regular level of abuse and came one out away from recording a 3-inning save by retiring all 8 batters he faced.
