Subject: Blue Jays @ White Sox
After losing 5 of 6 last week to the two worst teams in the West, what chance could the Jays possibly have against the best team in the league? You'd be surprised; Toronto management certainly was. The key was probably the bullpens -- BOTH teams generally sucked, instead of only the Jays for a change.... Game 1: Toronto jumped on the Sox for 3 in the first but it took monster underachiever Pat Hentgen only a short time to throw it all away -- and more, when he was gophered for the third time in barely 4 innings and permitted No Neck Newson to triple his season's home run total the space of 2 at-bats. Although Paul Kilgus quickly choked up a 2-out RBI that made the score 5-3 (run charged to Hapless Hentgen) he and, of all people, Duane Ward held Chicago to no runs thereafter despite plenty of baserunners. Robbie Alomar took care of the offense from that point, driving in 4 runs with a double and and home run; the first of which ended Wilson Alvarez's day and the second handed Jeremy Hernandez his first loss of the season. Final score: 7-5. =================================================== Game 2: The Jays had a 2-1 lead in the 6th as both mediocre starters (Witt & Fernandez) were actually pitching well, when suddenly it was Surgery Time. For a rare change the Jays got to be the doctor, scoring 6 times in the 6th -- and then reverted to typical victim status and gave 5 of them right back. The contest wasn't decided until the 9th inning and -- also for a VERY rare change -- what happened in that frame was good news instead of bad. Greg Myers greeted reliever Bryan Harvey with a sac fly; it wasn't much, but it was enough. Final score: 9-8. After Gene Harris was dismembered as usual and Jesse Orosco stunk out the joint further, Ward again came through (!) with some scoreless if not uneventful work on the mound. =================================================== Game 3: The pitchers restored order to some degree today, with the Sox holding a 1-0 lead in the 6th, at which time Molitor & Sprague delivered RBI singles and one inning later John Olerud added a 3-run homer. Todd Stottlemyre got in trouble immediately after getting the big lead, and Juan Guzman came in and generously gave the home team a couple of Todd's runs. But that was all; final score: 5-3. CHA got 11 hits, all singles, and Olerud was the star of the TOA attack with a double and home run which raised his average to .300. With *that* card it should be more like .400, but he plays for Toronto. Although the White Sox succeeded throughout the series in getting advantageous split cards on most of their low-percentage baserunning gambits (big surprise), they ran themselves out of a few innings today, with 3 CS and a pickoff.
