Subject: Florida @ San Francisco
The Marlins are swept at the Stick.
G1 Neither starting pitcher was particularly effective as each saw his ERA rise in this opening game. Down 3-0, Miami rallied for 1 in the 4th on Gary Redus' solo homer and 2 in the 5th on an RBI double by Chuck Carr and Charlie Hough's RBI single which scored Carr. San Francisco immediately struck back, taking the lead for good in the bottom of the 5th. After Robbie Thompson doubled with 1 out, one out later Matt Williams hit a 2-run bomb to put SF up, 5-3. The Giants added an unearned run in the 6th,and then over the final 3 innings, both teams pummeled the opposite's bullpen for 3 runs apiece.
San Francisco out-hit Florida, 14-11, and Matt Williams (5 3 3 6) launched 2 home runs to lead his Giants. Gary Redus also hit 2 homers, but his were struck in a losing cause.
Final Score: San Francisco 9, Florida 6 WP- Hanson 5-4, LP- Hough 1-9, SV- Beck (14) HR- M.Williams 2 (20), Redus 2 (5), Destrade (5)
G2 Marlins' starter John Cummings (2 5 5 5 2 1) just didn't have it in the middle game. He had given up just one run in the 2nd inning, but in the 3rd, the roof caved in. After the first 3 hitters reached, Matt Williams continued swinging a hot bat by launching his 3rd home run in 7at bats - this one was a 3-run homer and made the score, 5-0, in San Fran's favor. Reliever Richie Lewis was summoned, and he did well with 3 scoreless innings to keep Florida in it. Meanwhile, Giant starter Bill Swift (7 3 2 1 4 4)had 2 hits for the Giants.
Final Score: San Francisco 5, Florida 2 WP- Swift 10-3, LP- Cummings 0-2, SV- M.Jackson (3) HR- M.Williams (21)
G3 The finale was not exactly a mirror image of the game before, but the final score helps you believe it might be close. Once again a SF starter - Salomon Torres (6 1/3 4 2 1 4 4) - was stellar in his first ML win. And, the Giants got enough help from its lineup to win without much threat. Both the 3rd and the 6th inning featured San Francisco posting 2 runs. The 6th inning was capped by Willie McGee's 2-run single. After 6 innings, the home team had a5-1 lead. Florida chased Torres in the 7th after back-to-back singles around a stolen base plated a run. Reliever Mike Jackson struck out Jeff Conine and induced Destrade to ground out to completely extinguish the Marlins' last credible threat. Milt Thompson and McGee each had 2 hits for the Giants, whereas for the 2nd consecutive game, Florida had 4 scratch hits by 4 different batters.
