Subject: Reds @ Cardinals
After managing to somehow not be swept at home (again) by a first-year expansion team, the Reds hit the road and resume our usual luckless form.... Game 1: Welcome to the Reds, John Roper! And we wasted no time in showing the new pitcher how things are done around here. With 2 outs and 0 on in the SLN first, a timely 2-out error kept the inning alive and of course the next batter gophered him home. Boom -- an unearned 2-0 deficit, just that quick. Another helpful error gave the Cardinals another unearned run the 3rd and they built a 6-0 lead against the shell-shocked rookie. Meanwhile, Bob Tewksbury was nearly tossing a no-hitter at the unluckiest team in the majors. The one hit he permitted in the first four frames was a single by Roper, who doesn't yet understand why his far more talented teammates are so much more inept. After being nicked for those 6 runs (3 of them donated by sabotage defense) Roper settled down and worked 7 innings. In the end the Reds were only slightly outhit (10-8) and out-total based (13-11) but the clutch hits -- and sabotage defense -- went one direction only. Final score: 7-1. ============================================================== Game 2: Kevin Gross saw his team waste another good outing (7 IP, 2 runs), as once again we made Mike 'Hit Parade' Moore look like a Cy Young candidate. Cy Moore and two SLN relievers held the woeful Cincy offense to 5 singles and 3 walks and the Cards prevailed by the count of 3-1 after Luckless Larry Luebbers permitted them to tack on an insurance run by letting 4 of the 6 batters he faced to reach base. The contest was scoreless until a helpful 2-out wild pitch put a RISP for St. Louis, and naturally the next batter followed with a clutch single. A surgical split card gopher off the bat of Tom Pagnozzi made it 2-0. The Reds cut it to 2-1, loaded the bases with 1 out in the 8th, of course failed to score, then immediately choked up that insurance run to seal the defeat. ============================================================== Game 3: Blind squirrel, acorn, etc., etc., as the Reds got considerable help from the SLN defense (4 errors) but didn't need it (17 hits) and pummeled Rene Arocha for an 8-2 win that could easily have been far more lopsided (12 LOB, 2 GIDP, ELEVEN 'RLISP-2 Out'). Although John Smiley initially was determined to give back as many runs as we scored, he simply couldn't keep up and settled for a complete game 6-hitter. At the plate, Smiley recorded a 3 for 4 day and raised his average to .310 and therefore ought to be promoted in the lineup far ahead of Eddie Taubensee (.199), Chris Sabo (.195), Jeff Branson (.204), newly-activated Mark Lewis (.083) and about 90% of the rest of these massive underachievers.
