Subject: Yankees at Tigers
YANKEES at TIGERS April 9-12, 1970 This opening series featured 17 homeruns, 9 errors (6 by the Tigers), but 6 of the 8 starters lasted 7 innings or longer. The Yankees averaged over 11 hits a game while the Tigers were at just under 10. The Yankees batted .296 for the series (a big switch from last years .246) with a slugging % of .516! The Tiger hit .279 and .471 slg.%. The two teams combined to give up 26 walks but struck out 33 batters. This is going to be a fun but crazy and wild season in the AL East. Opening Day at Tiger Stadium featured the bunting on the upper deck fan++ade and all the excitement that this game of baseball can provide. Mickey Lolitch and the newest Yankee Jim Bunning locked up in a pitchers duel each going 8 innings and both leaving the game with the scored deadlocked at 2. The 10th inning showed how powerful the Yankees are this year and, with a little help from the Tiger defense, the Bronx Bombers erupt for 8 runs and win 10-2. Yankees 10-14-0 Tigers 2-7-2 WP: Lyle 1-0 LP: Grzenda 0-1 (33.75 era!) HRn++s: T. Conigliaro #1, Banks #1, Freehan #1 Mel Stottlemyer pitched a complete game allowing the Tigers only 1 run on 5 hits as the Yankees cruised to a 5-1 victory. Homers by Danny Cater and Joe Gibbs helped the Yanks jump out to a 3-0 lead and allowed Stott to relax on the mound. Yankees 5-7-2 Tigers 1-5-0 WP: Stottlemyer 1-0 LP: Murphy 0-1 HRn++s: Cater #1, Gibbs #1, Northrup #1 In the third game, the Yankees leapt out to an early 5-0 lead only to see the Tigers claw back into the game. Only a Tony C. eighth inning homerun and an unearned run in the ninth preserved the victory for Fritz Petersen. Joe Gibbs had 2 more dingers to give him 3 in the series. The Yankees emptied their bench almost entirely in the last innings trying to preserve the victory against a determined Tiger comeback. Yankees 7-8-1 Tigers 6-12-2 WP: Petersen 1-0 LP: Krause 0-1 SV: Tatum #1 HRn++s: T. Conigliaro #2, Gibbs #2, #3 The Yankees bombed Tiger starter Les Cain for 6 runs and 7 hits in 1.2 innings and thought they were looking at a laugher but they had already forgotten how well this Tiger squad fought back the night before. Going into the last of the 7th down 8-4, the Tigers scored 2 runs then 3 in the eighth and finally won the game on a Willie Horton pinch-hit Grand Slam! The game featured 8 homeruns with 2 coming from Mike Stanley. Yankees 9-16-0 Tigers 13-15-2 WP: Kilkenny 1-0 LP: Hamilton 0-1 HRn++s: Clarke #1, White #1, Banks #2, Cash #1, Freehan #2, Horton #1, Stanley #1, #2 _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp |
