The Padres were definitely wishing for no luck. Both teams had 11 hits. The Padres managed 4 doubles and the Rockies only 1, but the Rockies got 2 triples and 3 homers among their hits. In one inning the Padres had back-to-back single 1-14's and drew back-to-back 15's. The game ended with Gwynn drawing a 20 on a 1-16 bp single chance (keep in mind if he finishes one hit short of .400 on the year). Add in several outs in the middle of a sea of hits and no luck was definitely prefered in this one.   After a quiet first 2 innings (the Padres did hit into a dp in each inning), the offense started in the 3rd for both teams. Hamilton started the inning with a walk. After an out, back-to-back singles brought in the first run of the season. After another out, Caminiti doubled in both runners for a 3-0 lead. Rockies then started a streak of scoring in 5 straight innings. Bichette launched a solo bp homer with 2 outs in the 3rd. In the 4th, a single,wp (the first of 3 for Hamilton) and triple (split of 4) got them another run. Burk hit a 2 run auto hr in the 5th to give Colorado the lead. After Bell committed the rare 3 base error, Galaragga doubled in another run. Another triple in the 6th (split of 1) made it 6-3. Jeff Tabaka came in for the 7th and got the "Sambito" by allowing a hr to Jim Edmonds to start the inning (split of 2 on a 1-5 chance). It was announced shortly after the game that Tabaka was heading out of town....coincidence?  I think not.  The Padres started the 8th with 3 straight doubles (Gwynn drew a 17 on his 1-3 homer chance) and all 3 scored to make the final 7-6. game 2: Another scoreless one early. This time it was the 4th before the Padres put up a big inning. Chad Curtis' 3 run homer capped a 4 run inning. In the 5th, Scott Sanders helped himself out with an rbi single on an x play. In the 7th, the Padres had a hr1-8 triple and and triple 1-17 double and barely eked out  triple. Ausmus missed the homer and got modified down to a double and Discarcina got the 17. The lead was 6-0 and Sanders went out to start the 8th inning. Burks hit his 2nd triple in as many games to start the inning and scored on a groundout. After a single, Sanders left for Pedro Martinez... the other Pedro.  He missed the perfect Sambito because he walked a batter before allowing a homer that made it a 6-4 game. He retired 5 of the next 6 batters to give SD their first win. The one hit was a single 1-2 chance. game 3:  This one eventually became the Chad Curtis show but started off a well pitched game. In the 2nd inning both teams got 2 hits and had a play at the plate. One team drew a 17 on a 1-14 chance, the other drew a 4on a 1-13 chance.  No need to guess which team was which.  With no one on and 2 outs in the bottom of the 4th, Edmonds draws a 2 on his hr chance but is only a W so settles for a single. Next batter singles and then Edmonds scored when Gutierrez boots an easy grounder. On to the 7th and David Nied is still tossing a shutout. After 2 walks Nied is lifted and Reed gets the next 2 batters to leave runners on the corner. Ashby is allowed to hit for himself and works a walk to load the bases. Curtis followed and got a 1 on his hr 1-5 chance for a grand slam.  In the bottom of the 7th, first 2 Rockies go down before next 2 get singles. Up steps Bichette and he pulls a split of 2 but its only a 1b 1 chance and the Padres dodge a bullet. Curtis added a solo homer in the 9th to make the final 5-2 and Trevor Hoffman had a perfect 9th to earn the save. Gwynn went 6-14 for a .429 average as he opens his quest for .400.
