Subject: Florida @ Cincinnati
The Reds win a couple of 1-run games before Florida broke through in the finale.
G1 In the opener, the Reds seemed on their way to a fairly simple win, up 8-2 after 8 innings behind the pitching of starter John Smiley (8 4 2 2 4 6). However, Cincinnati pinch-hit for Smiley in the home half of the 8th which paid off with a PH 3-run homer by "the Hawk," Andre Dawson. In the spirit of "the Lord giveth, the Lord taketh away," relievers Todd Jones (0 3 4 4 1 0) and Jeff Brantley gave away the entire 6-run advantage in one inning. Florida's 9th wascapped by Greg Colbrunn's 3-run homer which tied the contest at 8-8. The comeback was in vain when it was all said and done because after the Reds made two outs in the 9th, Cincinnati received a double from Felix Jose and that was followed by singles by Reggie Sanders and Tony Fernandez and a home team win.
Final Score: Cincinnati 9, Florida 8 WP- Brantley 8-4. LP- Mutis 0-2 HR- Dawson (12), Colbrunn (4)
G2 Another game, another slugfest. This time thegame couldn't be finished in 9 innings. But, in the 12th, the Reds' took another close contest when Bret Boone reached 1st on Bret Barberie's error, and 2 outs later, Eric Anthony singled home Boone for the game-winner. Both Boone and Sanders' 3 hits were game-highs. Each team hit 2 home runs apiece.
Final Score: Cincinnati 7, Florida 6, 12 innings WP- Cox 2-0, Minor 0-3 HR- Mitchell (36), Sheffield (33), Larkin (18), Conine(20)
G3 Al Leiter (6 4 4 4 3 8) allowed all 4 runs in the 3rd inning, and Florida continued its scoring ways with 6 more tallies in the finale. With the score 4-4 in the top of the 7th, Manny Ramirez singled, and one out later, Bret Barberie singled before Tim Wallach's long blast put the Fish in front by 3 runs. Mike Hampton and Robb Nen kept the Reds off the scoreboard the rest of the way, and Florida had a 7-4 win.
Final Score: Florida 7, Cincinnati 4 WP- A.Leiter 7-8, LP- McElroy 4-3, SV- Nen (32) HR- Dawson (13), Sheffield (34), Wallach (28) |
