Previous message                 Next message Message #: 32410 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Apr 24, 2015 Subject: NLDS game 1, Reds @ Mets After a very slow start, particularly among our old friends the split cards, the Reds eventually got rolling and scored in 5 straight innings from the 4th through the 8th and registered an 8-2 win in the opening game of the best-of-5 series.   A pair of "backwards" lefty starters, John Smiley for the Reds and Pete Schourek for the Mets, exchanged goose eggs for 3 innings.  Smiley had a chance to deliver a blow when he batted with 2 RISP and 2 outs in the second, but flew out to end the inning.   Smiley then hit a batter and watched as the Mets hit paydirt on their first split card chance for a surgical single, but Smiley got tough and fanned Todd Hundley and Jose Vizcaino on 6 pitches to thwart that rally.   In the CIN 4th Reggie Sanders led off with a single and raced to second on a passed ball.  Cincy hero Herb Perry stepped in and collected his second of 4 hits for the day (and our only split card success in the first 7 tries), blooping a single to drive in Sanders for the contest's first run.   Finally starting to rack up hits against New York's ace lefty (the Reds were easily the best-hitting team vs. LHP in the NL in 1995), Barry Larkin doubled on a home run chance to put runners on 2nd & 3rd and Chad Curtis chased them both in with a single.   The Mets came back against Smiley moments later when Mark McLemore duplicated Curtis' feat of plating 2 runners with a single.  But that would be all the Mets would get, and Perry led off the next frame with a homer to give the Reds a 4-2 lead.   With the score 5-2 after 7 innings, the Mets began to unravel defensively in the 8th.  Cincy defensive replacement Jeff Branson doubled for his second hit of the day, Bernard Gilkey threw wildly trying to nail a runner on the bases (the Reds already had one gunned down earlier) and first baseman Bobby Bonilla booted a grounder for a single that allowed run #8 to score.   Jeff Shaw and Andres Berumen held the fort with 4 scoreless and generally effective (!) relief innings, in which they permitted just 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 5.  Infielders Perry, Larkin, Branson (who played only 3 1/2 innings) and Boone combined for 10 of the Reds' 15 hits and outfielder Curtis added another 3.   Alan
