In the race for the bottom, Padres keep pace by losing 2 out of 3 to the Fish. Sounding like a broken record series after series, the splits heavily favored one team.
game 1: Bp singles were 1-8 in this game. One team (who had 6 hits total none after the 3rd inning) got splits of 6,7 and 8 (not to mention a split of 2 for a double). The other team got a 9, which was the lowest of their 3 splits for the game. Both teams started the game the same way...double,single,single and the game was tied at 1. In the 2nd, Florida got 2 hits and 3 walks to score 2 times. They manufactured a run in the 6th on a single, bunt, groundout and wild pitch. Gwynn had an rbi triple in the 8th to make the final 4-2. Silly Darren Erstad tried to stretch a lead off single in the 9th and was thrown out on his 1-15 chance.
game 2: Conine got a 2 run bp homer on a split of 1 in teh first inning. Padres got a run in the 2nd despite Discarcina missing the 2b 1-14 chance (a later batter would also miss that same split both at least getting a single). After 2 quick outs in the 5th, the Padres got 2b,1b,1b,bb, 2b to score 3 times to take the lead. Caminiti had an rbi single in the 7th to stretch the lead to 3. Tewksbury left after 7 and the arson squad came on. Petkovsek allowed a 2 run homer in the 8th but Finley hit a solo homer in the 9th to restore a 2 run lead. Hoffman came on and allowed a lead off triple (split of 1) and a grounder to make the final 6-5.
game 3: Brown and Hamilton both pitched like the aces they are supposed to be in this one and it took 12 innings to finally get a winner. Tony Gwynn finally got a break as he singled on 1-5 chances his first 2 times up. A double play grounder followed the 2nd hit but it scored a run. Hamilton had a no hitter going until 2 out in the 5th inning. A single,walk,error loaded the bases before Hamilton got out #3. 3 straight one out singles in the 7th tied the game for Florida. SD had a chance in the 10th. Single+error, walk and sac bunt put men on 2nd and 3rd but Santiago struck out and cangelosi came through with the clutch out. With 2 out in the 10th and 2 on, White's single (split of 3) somehow didn't bring the winning run home. Florida again threatened in the 11th. 2 singles (one a split of 3) put runners on before a dp ended the inning. In the 12th, Sheffield led off with a 1-5 bp homer chance. The split was yet another 3 (that was 3 straight 3's for the Marlins if you weren't keeping track) and 2-1 game and series win.
Gwynn had 3 hits in each game in his return from the DL and has 7 multi hit games in his last 8 as he raised his average to .339 on the season.
