NEW YOURK YANKEES AT BALTIMORE ORIOLES
August 17-19, 1970

Very important series in the AL East as the Yankees have started to slip
while both the Orioles and the Red Sox have started a stretch run. Coming
into Baltimore, the Yankees had a 3 game lead over the Red Sox and a 5 game
lead over the Orioles. They would leave with less.

Game one was a back and forth game with the lead changing 4 times.
Baltimore took a 2-0 lead in the first as 2 singles, a passed ball and Frank
Robinsonn++s double off of 20 game winner Fritz Petersen plated both runs. In
the fourth, the Yanks got 3 singles off of Mike Cuellar for a run and then
took the lead when Tony Conigliaro homered with Jim Fregosi aboard in the
fifth. Merv Rettenmund hit a two run shot in the bottom of the fifth to
give the birds back the lea. Frank Robinson also had a solo shot in the
fifth to give the Orioles a 5-3 advantage. Scoring single runs in the
sixth, seventh and eighth, the Yankees again went out in front 6-5. But
Baltimore put a 3 spot on the board in the bottom of the eighth off of
Yankee closer Ken Tatum and survived a rally in the ninth to hold on for an
8-6 victory. Fregosi, Munson, Buford and Frank Robinson all had 4 hit games

Yankees 6-14-1
Orioles 8-12-1
WP: Hall (7-6)
LP: Tatum (2-3)
SV: Watt #5
HRn++s: Fregosi #21, Conigliaro #23, Rettenmund #12, F. Robinson #20

The second game was an old fashioned blow out Yankee style as Dave McNally
had nothing. He lasted just 1.2 innings giving up 6 runs on just 4 hits.
The first inning would tell the story as the Yanks scored 3 runs on just one
hit. Stan Bahnsen went most of the way for the win. The Yanks scored 3
runs in each of the first three innings and would score in six separate
innings.

Yankees 13-16-1
Orioles 5-9-0
WP: Bahnsen (12-14)
LP: McNally (18-15)
HRn++s: Fregosi #22, Murcer #12 & #13, Buford #14

Getaway day saw the Orioles score 3 in the first and 2 in the second and the
hold on tightly as the Yankees came all the way back but just fell short
5-4. Again the Yanks outhit the birds but couldnn++t put the runs on the
board. Jim Palmer was great as he got the outs when he need them. Boog
Powel hit a 2 run shot in the first and Dave Johnson had another in the
second as the long ball again killed Jim Bunning.

Yankees 4-10-0
Orioles 5-6-1
WP: Palmer (16-9)
LP: Bunning (12-10)
SV: Hall #3
HRn++s: Powell #41, Johnson #10

Notes: The Yankees got 40 hits in the 3 games. Fregosi 8-15, 2 hrn++s, 2b,
3b and 6 runs. Buford 7-11, 1 hr and 4 runs. Ken Tatumn++s era is above 2.00
for the first time since I took over this team.
