NEW YORK YANKEES AT WASHINGTON SENATORS
Aug. 31 n++ Sept. 2, 1970
The Yanks cruised into the nations capital looking to reduce their magic
number from 13 and the hapless Senators were trying to play the spoiler this
week against both front running teams in the AL East.
In game 1, John Cumberland made a spot start for the Yanks facing Casey Cox
for the Senators. Horrace Clarke doubled in Billy Cowan in the second
inning and Eddie Brinkman had a ball roll through his legs that allowed
Clarke to score from 2nd. Murcer led off the third with a home run and a
double followed by 3 singles plated 2 more in the fourth and the Yanks led
5-0. Cumberland set down the first nine he faced and had a one hitter into
the fifth but the Senators got to the lefty. McMullen singled and
Cumberland plunked Casanova. Cullen doubled home both runners and later
scored on a sac fly, 5-3 Yanks. A parade of Yankee pitchers held the
Senators in check until Roy Foster faced Ken Tatum in the eighth and took
him deep. Roy White singled in Murcer who had doubled in the ninth to make
the final 6-4.

Yankees 6-12-0
Senators 4-7-1
WP: Cumberland (4-5)
LP: Cox (4-7)
SV: Lyle #8
HRn++s: Murcer #14, Foster #30

Game 2 was a pitchers duel between Mel Stottlemyre and Rudy May. Both
pitchers threw 4 hitters. Stottlemyre went the distance but May lasted only
3 innings. Roy White went yard in the first and Horrace Clarke hit a 2 run
shot in the second (#7 and hit only 4 in 1971). The Senator pen threw a
no-no for final six innings but the Senator bats were quiet. Stott fanned 3
and walked 2 never allowing more than 1 baserunner in any inning.

Yankees 3-4-0
Senators 0-4-0
WP: Stottlemyre (15-11)
LP: May (7-11)
HRn++s: White #25, Clarke #7

The Yanks went for the sweep sending Steve Kline to the hill against John
Shellenback. The Yankees started early as Tony Conigliaro hit a 3 run bomb
in the first but the Senators answered as Duke Sims hit a 2 run shot in the
bottom of the first. Tony C. had an rbi single in the third. Eddie
Brinkman singled in Sims and Hart in the last of the third to tie the game
at 4. 3 singles and a sac fly for the Yanks in the seventh put them up 6-4.
With 2 out in the top of the eighth, Hart made an error on Murcers
grounder. Danny Cater hit the next pitch into the left field stand and the
Yanks win 8-4 and lower their magic number to 10.

Yankees 8-10-0
Senators 4-8-1
WP: Kline (3-3)
LP: Shellenback (8-4)
HRn++s: Conigliaro #30, Cater #12, Sims #22
