Subject: Re: [SmileyList] Home/Road split
Scott, You raise some valid points: the other leagues I am in both use autoplay for a significant portion of the schedule, which makes it impossible to tell how the human owners are doing in games they manage (not impossible, really, just more tedious to discover). Is it inevitable in a league where owners play all the road games that we'll wind up with massive RFA's year after year? Is HAL that inept? I use the Super HAL lineups (depth charts) but not the Super HAL bullpen, because I am too lazy to figure it out. The other leagues I'm in are playing 1913 and 1951, and bullen usage isn't much of a concern in those eras, so I do OK in that respect. I know HAL has ROUTINELY made absolutely idiotic bullpen decisions in the Reds home games (almost as idiotic as the moves the Reds manager makes in road games); does using the Super HAL bullpen feature wisely mean significantly better performance for the home team. I'm sure it couldn't hurt. Since we don't use park effects (except for doubles & triples) because those features are not enabled on the cards for the years we are playing, it would seem like that is not a major factor in explaining road-home differential in SMILEY. Alan ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Monday, February 25, 2002 12:47 AM Subject: [SmileyList] Home/Road split
In regards to home/road difference, I suggest the league take a cautious approach here. It is real easy to look at raw numbers and make a snap judgement, but a lot harder to look at the full scope of a team. What type of team is it... A power team in a pitchers park? Probably will win more games on road then at home. Same as a punch and judy team playing in a HR park. What about good teams in general. I would hope most of the Smiley owners with a good team could beat HAL (even Super Hal) more times then not with everything being equal. A huge advantage (even with Home field advantage turned on) to manage as the game situations occur... I would hope a manager of a decent team could win at least 10 more road games (46-35)... Now if a team that is decent for the first 3 years of Smiley did that, they have 33 more wins on the road then losses. So assuming the team is a .500 team each year, this manager is at a +33. Is he cheating? I wouldn't think so based on the above. What about teams that have good road records but lousy home records. Assuming that the team isn't a power team in a pitchers park (as described above), and plays over their head one year (30-51 at home and 55-26 for example) is that to say the guy is cheating? I know for a fact that isn't neccessarily the case. I have seen the above happen on several occasions in face to face leagues. So isolated cases like this do happen frequently. But, I do think the Red flags come out if the same team consistently has splits like the above example. 1 year means nothing, 2 years the league better start keeping an eye on it.. By the 3rd year (not neccessarily in a row) I think the pattern is very definable and swift action is needed.
Again, just my .02
Scott
