Subject: World Series game 3

This one started ugly but went down to the wire as the teams travelled
to Minnesota to resume the series.

The top of the first was an indication of what kind of game it would be
for Twins starter Ken Holtzman.. He walked the bases loaded but got out
of trouble by getting Dick Dietz to fly out to end the inning. The game
stayed scoreless until the 3rd when the Twins used the every other
batter reaches base approach to take the lead. Cardenas led off by
getting hit by a pitch, one out later Ken Holtzman singled. One out
later, Rod Carew singled in the games first run. Tony Oliva then sat on
a Bill Singer change-up and hit it into the left field seats for a 4-0
Twins lead. Meanwhile, the wild Ken Holtzman continued to be unhittable.
San Fransisco finally got their first hit to lead off the fifth. A pair
of one out walks loaded the bases but Rico Carty hit into a 5-4-3 dp to
end the inning. Minnesota used a pair of 2 out walks sandwiched around a
single to load the bases in the bottom of the inning, but Harmon
Killebrew could not produce, hitting a weak ground ball to end the
threat.

The Giants finally broke through in the 7th inning. Lanier doubled to
lead off the inning and stayed there as the next 2 batters made outs.
Grabarkowitz walked and Rico Carty came through this time with an rbi
double. Mitterwald could not handle a Holtzman curveball and allowed the
second run to score. THe Twins got one of the runs back in the bottom of
the 7th off the Giants bullpen.Carew singled and scored on a Killebrew
doulble. Bob Priddy then mishandled a comebacker but avoided further
damage when he got Brant Alyea to pop out to end the threat. The Giants
had some more two out lightning in the 8th to tighten the game further.
Lanier doubled again and scored when Oliva threw the ball away on pinch
hitter Ken Berry's single. Jimmy Wynn then singled in Berry to cut the
lead to one, but pinch hitter Bobby Bonds struck out to end the inning.
The Twins went 1-2-3 in the 8th. Rico Carty led off the Giants 9th with
a walk. Willie McCovey then stepped in and got a 2 column roll.
Unfortunately for the Giant faithful, it was the low end of the column
and it turned into a double play. Willie Mays then grounded out to give
the Twins a 3-0 series lead.

48,215 fans watched an exciting game at Metropolitan Stadium. The
Minnesota
Twins topped the San Francisco Giants by the slimmest of margins, 5 to
4.

Minnesota tallied 4 runs in the 3rd inning when they had 3 base hits.
The big
moment was provided by Tony Oliva who made the Minnesota fans a happy
lot
when he belted a three-run homer (his 1st of the season). Minnesota had
8
hits for the afternoon.

The winning pitcher was Ken Holtzman(1-0) who allowed 4 runs in 7 and
2/3
innings. Holtzman got relief help from Stan Williams who gained credit
for
his 2nd save. Bill Singer(0-1) suffered the loss. He surrendered 6
hits and
2 walks in 6 innings.
