Subject: your opinion: is there a 'shortage' of pitching?
Perhaps a better question would be: is there a problem with the distribution of innings/GS across the teams? Or in other words, do we need to set a maximum number of IP which can be retained by a team at cutdown time and/or an IP draft limit? It is obviously true that certain teams do have quite a bit more IP than anyone could possibly use in a 154-game season, but is that a severe enough 'problem' to warrant a change in the rules? A team needs a little over 9 IP/game, which is about 1400 per 154 games. A roster limit of, for example, 1700 IP or so should give teams plenty of room to maneuver to try to get 1400 *quality* innings out of their staff and would give the pitching-poor teams a deeper pool to select from. The reason for bringing this up now is that a lack of pitching was the stated reason for the ex-CHA owner suddenly quitting, although I am not suggesting that his own drafting strategy wasn't to blame (perhaps Granny Hamner was a luxury that the 1959 White Sox could not afford?). I appreciate hearing from anyone who would like to have some input on the subject.... :-) Thanks, Alan |
