Previous message                 Next message Message #: 6484 Message from: Steve Bivens Sent: Mar 5, 2003 Subject: Twin/White Sox trade Since this trade has been approved, I would like to take the time to weigh in with my opinion as a trade committee member. It is not my intent to belittle or embarrass anyone, but to share my thought processes when evaluating trades. Basically I believe that NO trade should be disallowed if both managers agree to the trade and they have established themselves as "long-term, committed" members of the league. However, the trade committee was formed to protect the best interests of the league. Not all managers qualify as "long-term, committed" members. Therefore, I would consider the following: 1) Do both managers qualify as "long-term, committed". 2) Does the trade provide equal value to both sides. 3) If it doesn't provide equal value, can the side receiving the lesser value justify the trade. Reasons for justification? (A good reason would be a pennant run). 4) In spite of all the above, is the trade a sufficient detriment to SMILEY to deny it. How do I respond to these four criteria in regards to the Soderholm for Dent trade? 1) Rick and Ben both qualify as "long-term, committed". 2) Does the trade provide equal value to both sides? Here are the career win shares for both players. (This assumes Soderholm is still a White Sox in '79 based on plate appearances): 73 74 75 76 77 78 79 Total Soderholm 4 15 14 0 20 16 5 74 Dent 2 16 16 9 x x x 43 In my opinion, the White Sox received a significant advantage in value based on career value. Even if you only count "good" seasons, Soderholm has 4 "good" good seasons to Dent's 2 1/2. 3)If I reached this point in the evaluation, I would ask Rick to justify his reasons for the trade. I am not asking him to do so for purposes of this mail, however, if he told me that he thought he could contend in '73, '74, or both having Dent play shortstop, this might be a very good reason for making an "unequal" value trade. In other words, winning adds value for the Twins. 4)This trade is not a sufficient detriment to the league to void it out-of-hand. Being a member of the trade committee can be a somewhat daunting task, and I wanted to share my thoughts before I had a chance to nix someone's trade.
