Subject: Reds @ Dodgers

If the Reds ever start getting our share of the breaks, look out!  And it appears to finally be happening - for now - after 5 long seasons of watching them mostly go the other way.  It must be the fact that we're now documenting all rolls and splits.....

Game 1: Andy Messersmith & Horacio Pina combined to permit only 6 hits and 3 walks to the Reds - but 6 of those baserunners crossed the plate while the Dodgers had 11 LOB in the 6-1 Cincy victory.  Earl Williams smacked his first homer as a member of the Reds, and Don Gullett threw 7.1 shutout innings to raise his record to 3-0.

Game 2: Some of the Reds may finally be getting their fair share of the breaks, but one who is not is Tom Seaver.  Handed two runs in the top of the first, Seaver (as usual for 1973) made it a 2-2 tie after one.  LA took the lead in the sixth on Willie McCovey's home run (the old Cincy Nemesis had a pair of them, and all 3 Dodger RBI), but the visitors got some luck in the ninth to pull out the win: single, e5, sac bunt that should have been a hit, 2 more singles on blown x-plays, an IW to load the bases followed by an unintentional walk.... and the final score was 5-3.  LA had only 3 LOB on this day.

Game 3: A near-repeat of game 1: LA had a ton of runners, but few managed to score.  LA led 2-0 in the fifth, when a Pete Rose clutch single tied the game.  Still tied at 2, Tom Hall courageously retired Willie Mac with 2 outs and the bases loaded in the ninth (after uncourageously walking them full in the first place).

With the go-ahead run on third and two outs in the 11th, Hall was lifted for rookie pinch-hitter Dan Driessen, and Driessen (in his only AB of the series) singled on a low-percentage split chance to give Cincy the lead!  Willie Davis singled to lead off the LA 11th but was picked off by Bob Miller just in front of Bill Russell's walk and Jim Fregosi's single... so no damage was done and the Reds prevailed 3-2.

Reds fans must be well aware that this spell can't last much longer.....

Alan
