Reggie Smith had 2 base hits as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Pittsburgh
Pirates by a score of 3 to 2 at BUSCH STADIUM.

Clay Kirby(3-3) gave St. Louis a solid outing. He surrendered 4 hits and 3
walks in 6 and 2/3 innings seeing his ERA drop from 5.14 to 4.75. Pittsburgh
threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Al Hrabosky gained credit for his 1st save. Dock Ellis(3-3) was the losing
pitcher. 'You have to give Pittsburgh credit, they fought us tough to the
end' Derek Jones said. 'It could have gone either way, but I'm glad we
pulled out the victory.'

Cardinals by a score of 10 to 8 at BUSCH STADIUM.

Rooker(5-1) pitched a fine game. He went 7 innings allowing 4 hits and no
walks. St. Louis had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up
short.

Dave Giusti gained credit for his 4th save. Mike Caldwell(2-4) was the loser.
Despite losing Derek Jones was optimistic after the game. 'We'll get over
this one. Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't. Any one
of a dozen little things go different, and we come out on top.'
