Jerry Koosman whiffed 10 batters at THREE RIVERS STADIUM as the New York NL
Mets beat the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates in 10 innings by the count of 4 to
3.

The score was tied at 3 after nine. New York NL won it in the 10th inning.
Rusty Staub reached on an error. Johnny Bench stepped up to the plate and he
banged out a single. Two outs later Kurt Bevacqua came to the plate and
stroked a one-base hit scoring the run. Pittsburgh was out-hit by New York
NL, 10 hits to 7.

Jerry Cram(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings. Ramon
Hernandez(0-3) was given the loss in relief. It was a tough loss for him as
he did not allow an earned run in his 1 inning of work.

In an great finish the New York NL Mets came back in the top of the ninth and
held on to win over the ice-cold Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 7 to 5 at
THREE RIVERS STADIUM.

New York NL won the game with a rally in the 9th inning as they scored 5 runs
on 5 base hits. Pittsburgh proved to be no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.

Jim York(2-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing no
runs. Tug McGraw was credited with his 6th save. The losing pitcher was Dave
Giusti(1-5) in relief. He allowed 3 hits and 1 walk in 2/3 of an inning.

After the game, it took a long while before Darren Dawson emerged from his
office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He
concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood tonight, as
I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more
light-hearted over in the New York NL locker room.'
