Subject: Reds @ Giants

A series that featured several games that neither team apparently wanted to win, highlighted by shameful performances by both bullpens (nothing new about that in Cincy's case, but it was mostly the Giants who suffered this time around; maybe whatever our guys have got has finally become contagious)....

Game 1: Don Wilson cruised along with a 2-hitter into the middle innings.... and was losing 3-0 since the breaks were a one-way street until the Reds' sixth.  John D'Acquisto was lifted with two runners on and one man out, and Lindy McDaniel proceeded to bring down the house: 4 hits later, Wilson had himself a 6-3 lead.  Temporarily.  Wilson began bleeding it away but still left with a lead, then it took just one Will McEnaney gopher ball before we were all tied up again.  However, the Reds managed two triples and 3 runs in the ninth, and Joe Niekro registered his first win of 1974 by holding the fort in the home half of the inning.

Game 2: Steve Hargan threw a good game - even escaping his typical first-inning catastrophe - but Reggie Cleveland was tossing a gem of his own and Hargan was looking at a 1-0 deficit after six innings.  Cincy was doing our best to avoid scoring, for example bunting into 3 outs without advancing a single runner (and actually erasing one).  The San Fran defense came to our rescue and contributed 2 unearned runs in the seventh, and Hargan left with a 3-1 lead.  Dick Baney tried mightily to blow it in the SF seventh but was yanked just before the match reached the gasoline.  Randy Moffitt was then beaten around for 5 runs and the Reds had an 8-2 win that was much closer than the score indicated.

Game 3: Jim Perry, working on about his ninth lousy start in a row, turned an early 2-0 Cincinnati lead into a 3-2 San Francisco lead, and Reds' reliever Pete Richert ensured there would be no late comeback on this day.  Final score: 6-3, Giants.

Game 4: Don Gullett & Fritz Peterson were scoreless into the fifth when the Reds broke on top with 3 runs and KO'd Peterson in the process.  By the end of the fifth, Cincy was losing 4-3 and Gullett was in the showers, but we tied it up in the sixth.  The teams traded runs in the late innings, and in the tenth it was Jim Brewer's turn to implode: Cincy got 5 runs, 4 of them on George Foster's two-out grand slam which followed an IW to Pete Rose and a regular walk to Junior Kennedy which forced in the first run.  With all other Cincinnati relievers cowering underneath the bench in the bullpen, Pedro Borbon worked 5 innings to earn the win.
