Subject: Reds @ Padres
The Padres once again save their best for the Reds, as Cincy's long winning streak has dissolved into a 3-5 record over our past 8 games. Good pitching, as always, was the rule for both teams in this series as all Cincy batters (save for Joe Morgan and George Foster) remain mired in tremendous slumps, underachieving to an astonishing degree.... Game 1: It looked like the Cincy Road Show would continue to roll on - and the offense even showed up! - as we pummeled Dan Spillner for a 6-run fifth on the way to a 9-2 win. Don Gullett was very wild for the Reds but hung on long enough to get some offensive support, and Steve Hargan registered a 3-inning save. Slumpmeisters Perez, Griffey & Geronimo each managed a couple of hits and all Cincy starters collected at least one. Game 2: Two Padre errors helped the Reds to an early 3-0 lead, but from that point on the San Diego would play perfect ball for pretty much the rest of the series. Stan Bahnsen rapidly gave back the entire lead + another run for good measure, and Cincy lost by the score of 4-3 despite 4+ innings of competent relief from Will McEnaney (HAL's favorite bullpen stooge this year) and Rawly Eastwick. After 2 outs in the SD fourth, the Pads plated 3 runs, aided greatly by a couple of Bahnsen walks and a wild pitch. Game 3: In what had to be the best day of Ed Bane's life, he singled, walked, and took a no-hitter into the sixth. Amazingly, Dave Goltz did even better: Bane left in the 8th after allowing a solo home run to Jerry Martin, while Goltz tossed 7 shutout innings. Unfortunately, Dave LaRoche was then officially initiated into the Cincinnati Arson Squad, turning the probable 1-0 victory into a 2-1 defeat with one flick of his wrist - seconds after Cincy took the lead, Felix Millan singled & Dave Winfield deposited a LaRoche pitch into the stands. Game 4: It was Tom Seaver's turn to be Eddie Bane, as he took a PERFECT GAME into the seventh. Enzo Hernandez had attempted a cheap bunt single to spoil the gem in the sixth, but was gunned down by third baseman Doug Rader. But Johnny Grubb led off the seventh by carefully finding the Reds worst defender, and reached on a blown-x single by Bobby '5' Mitchell in RF. The Reds batters eked out 4 runs against Brent Strom & Don DeMola, and it wasn't until the ninth that San Diego got their first legit hit of the day (also by Grubb), Seaver finishing with a 2-hit shutout & 7 Ks.
