Williams provided much of the offense. He slapped a one-base hit in the 2nd inning, belted a three-run homer in the 6th inning and smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 19th of the season) in the 8th inning. New York NL rapped out 10 hits for the afternoon. For Matlack(8-11) it was his 3rd shutout this year. Bert Blyleven(10-8) was charged with the loss. He struck out 10 batters in 6 innings despite losing the game. Alan Bosslet was obviously impressed with the pitching of Matlack, 'That guy made us look a little silly out there this afternoon. We just couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for him. I just hope that he got that kinda performance out of his system.' |
