august 27 Third baseman Ron Cey left the yard at Jack Murphy Stadium where the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres in 12 innings 3 to 2. The score was tied at 2 after nine. Los Angeles won it in the 12th inning. Cey reached on an error. Cey stepped up next and he lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 26th of the season). Los Angeles and San Diego each finished the night with 9 hits. The victory was credited to Al Downing(5-2) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Tom Burgmeier recorded the save, his 5th. Jim Todd(4-4) was the losing pitcher in relief. He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in his 3 innings of work.
