Third baseman Ron Cey left the yard at Jack Murphy Stadium where the Los
Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres in 12 innings 3 to 2.

The score was tied at 2 after nine.  Los Angeles won it in the 12th inning.
Cey reached on an error.  Cey stepped up next and he lofted a solo-blast
'downtown' (his 26th of the season).  Los Angeles and San Diego each finished
the night with 9 hits.

The victory was credited to Al Downing(5-2) who went 2 innings, allowing no
runs. Tom Burgmeier recorded the save, his 5th.  Jim Todd(4-4) was the losing
pitcher in relief.  He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned
run in his 3 innings of work.

Andy Messersmith took a no-hitter into the 7th inning as the Los Angeles
Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres in 10 innings 3 to 1 at Jack Murphy
Stadium.

The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings.  Los Angeles won the
game in the 10th inning.  Davey Lopes led off and started the rally when he
delivered a base-hit, and an error was also committed.  After an out was
recorded, Lee Lacy came to the plate and drew a walk.  A balk was called.
Messersmith came up and he lashed a single knocking home two runners.  Los
Angeles had only 6 hits for the game.

The win went to Messersmith(19-11) who allowed 1 run in the game.  The
right-handed Messersmith lost his no-hit bid when Mike Ivie singled with one
out in the 7th inning.  Tom House(3-3) absorbed the loss in relief.

Los Angeles now has a record of 82-59.  With the loss San Diego now has a
record of 75-66.
