With the division title already won, Boston trotted out a lot of B squadders, mixed in with the regulars and still manages to sweep the lowly Tigers.  Detroit is now 63 games back. The record is 69 games but that was the expansion royals. The record for an established team is 50.

Game 1: The Boston bats were still celebrating their second division title and managed just 6 hits, 3 by Jim Rice. However that was just enough as Roger Moret was sharp, allowing just 5 hits. 3 singles and a passed ball helped Boston score their 2 runs while Detroit got their run via a Darrel Chaney error. Boston won 2-1.

Game 2: Boston got 2 in the top of the inning on a Fred Lynn homer only to see Joe Rudi hit a 3 run shot in the bottom of the inning off Ross Grimsley. From there it was all Boston. Lynn added another homer later and Boston rolled to a 12-3 win. Joe Coleman and Dave Lemanczyk both had similar lines  6 runs 5 earned 1 walk 3 k’s and 1 hr allowed. The difference was Coleman pitched 6 innings to Lemmy’s 3.

Game 3: The Boston offense taketh, the Boston defense giveth away. Boston put a 3 spot on the board in the 5th,7th and 8th inning and then withstood 7 unearned runs to hold on for a 10-9 win. Boston was up 10-3 going into bottom of the 8th when Melton hit a one out homer to cut the lead to 10-3. With 2 out and 2 on, McBride and Burleson made back to back errors, plating 2 more runs. 2 singles brought in another run and left the bases laoded. Bill Freehan then drove one to the gap (HR 1-12,2b) that scored two and Joe Rudi was gunned at the plate to end the inning. Melton walked to lead off the 9th, was sacrificed to 2nd, but was stranded there to end the game.

Game 4: Jim Burton made his first start of the year and pitched 7 shutout innings allowing just 5 hits and 1 walk. Bob Montgomery hit a 3 run homer to lead the 6-0 win.

Mike
