Padres came into the series with just 6 blown saves all year….and proceed to blow saves in the first 3 games. The Padres are solidly in 3rd in the division and can’t wait to hit the golf links in the off season.

Game 1: Ken McMullen established an eerie pattern in this game. Twice he led off innings with a triple (one on a hr 1-19) and twice he stayed there as the next two batters made outs before Mike Ivie drove him in, once with a single and once on a Marty Perez error that gave the Padres a 6-5 lead in the 8th. SD tacked on 2 in the 9th  (on a McMullen single)to open an 8-5 lead. Atlanta loaded the bases off Jim Todd with one out and Tom House came on to give up a tying triple (3b 1-6 flyout). A walk followed and the Braves had 2 on with one out and a chance to win there. House worked out of that jam and we went to extras. San Diego got the winning run in the top of the 11th before sweating out the bottom of the inning. Don Demola came in and with 2 outs gave up his customary homerun (auto bp). Luckily the batter was the Biffster and it was only a single. SD wins 9-8.

Game 2: Padres enjoy a 5 run 2nd and take a 5-3 lead into bottom of the ninth. Jim Todd was working his 3rd inning of relief and gave up 2 singles and a hbp to load the bases with no outs. A sac fly and pop out left the Pads one out from victory. Bobby Darwin singled in the tying run before Todd got the 3rd out to send the game to extras again. After a single and 2 outs in the 11th, Montanez walked and Darwin singled again to score the winning run.

Game 3:  Padres have a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of 6th. A Cash homer and 3 singles tie the game up. Dave Winfield hit homer #9 to give the padres the lead right back. Bill Greif came on and 3 singles and a sac fly later, let the lead get away.  Padres got first and 3rd with one out in the 9th but could not tie the game.

Game 4:  Padres were down 4-1 when 3 straight singles in the 7th brought in one run and left men on the corners with 0 outs. A pop out and dp killed that rally. In the 8th , with 2 on and 2 out, Ed Kirkpatrick got a clutch out on a 3-9 (3-10 would have been an auto bp homer) to kill yet another rally. Don Demola then came on and gave up not one, but 2, solo homers. Dave Winfield hit his team high 10th homer in the 9th to make the final 6-3.  McMullen had yet another lead off triple in this game.
