Subject: Mets Sweep Padres!

Game 1:  Tortoise vs Hare - this time the Hare held on to win.  Mets jump out to an early lead and let the Padres pick away and tie the game.  The Mets then score 6 more and watch as the Friars score 4 before Apodaca shuts them down,

Game 2: A Jerry Remy double gives the Mets the lead and a Reggie Smith home run locks it up.

Game 3: Dan Spillner dances between the raindrops - at the end of 6 he had a 9-hit shutout going.  Meanwhile, Jon Matlack had been smacked about - giving up 3 in the 1st and 1 more in the 3rd.  Back-to-back 2-out homers in the 5th brought the Mets within 2, then a clutch 2-out 8th inning single by John Milner put the Mets ahead to stay.  New York had 11 LOB and 2 DPs to make the game much closer than it should have been.

In a tight game it was the New York NL Mets 10, the San Diego Padres 8 at Jack
Murphy Stadium.

Dave Tomlin(2-0) was called upon to do the job and he was the winning pitcher.
He allowed 3 hits and no walks in 2 innings.  Due to a poorly pitched
ballgame, scoring in 5 different innings was still not enough for San Diego
to come away with the victory.

Tomlin got help from Alan Foster who was credited with his 1st save.  Butch
Metzger(1-2) was charged with the loss in relief.

The New York NL ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 21-15.
With this loss, San Diego has a 5-5 record of late, 21-15 overall.
